Are you giving up anything for Lent? Any Carnival celebrations?
Re: Are you giving up anything for Lent? Any Carnival celebrations?
I'm debating whether or not to give something up. In the past I would give up chocolate, but I haven't been eating nearly as much lately as I used to, and it was never that hard for me, anyway. I always felt that it should be something that's difficult to give up or the point is missed. I haven't thought of anything yet for this year.
DH talked me into giving up TV with him one year. Yeah, then he worked 14-16 hour days and I was stuck at home to twiddle my thumbs every evening.
I read, of course, but TV in the evening really relaxed me back then, and I got more frustrated than anything.
Not planning on giving anything up for Lent, but mostly because I've never had Lent in my church, so...not really used to it (and, I'm not particularly religious). Maybe I should tell DH that I plan on giving up sex for Lent, just to see what he says.
As for Carnival...I absolutely HATE Carnival time here in the NL. People are constantly drunk and loud, and I guess I'm just an old biddy that can't handle it. Needless to say, we might go out for a few hours because we have work colleagues in from the US and I'm sure they'll want to experience it all. Sigh.
I never really gave up things because it never seemed like a big deal. But a few years ago, when we were living in Canada and I was unemployed, I gave up any impulse/luxury purchases for myself. That was a big sacrifice because I spent a lot of my days shopping here and there. I wouldn't even buy a pack of gum from the grocery store checkout aisle.
Save me money AND was a constant reminder of my bad habits.
...maybe I'll try that again this year. might not be as severe, but it's still something.
Not giving anything up for Lent.
M's school is doing a carnival on Tuesday, I still have to decide what to dress him up as. He has a pirate costume, but he doesn't want to wear it. I may make him a robot costume, any cheap and easy to make costume ideas are welcome!
He could be an M&M, easy to make and cheap!
Good idea, Thanks! I'll have to check his closet to see what we already have.
Unnecessary purchases (e.g. clothing and treats). H and I have been a little OTT w/ spending/buying lately, so good excuse.
For health reasons (my belated NY resolution) will try to give up booze and snacks (I'm a savory v. sweets girl, so snacks are more of a commitment for me than sweets).
No big plans for Carnivale, but we are going away this weekend, so that's cool. One last southern Italian wine and bad food binge!! Heading to Matera in Basilicata (basically the instep part of the boot
)
We had our carnival celebration at school today - it was a blast! It was the first time I had seen them "burn the sardine". (Do they burn the sardine in Madrid, or is that a Cantabria thing?) I dressed up in a sexy red trash bag costume but I thought it was important to dress like the kids and set a good "teamwork" example.
I won't be giving anything up. We're taking advantage of the break to head to the Pyranees - looks like sunny and chilly weather, I can't wait to get a nice sunburn with DH!
Ooh! I love Matera. It's beautiful. Enjoy!
Besides sex with the cute dimpled Brazilian (I'm at the lounge in Heathrow and the plane to Rio leaves in two hours), we have tickets to the big samba parade contest at the Sambodrome, and we'll probably hit up at least one street party in Copacabana.
