Tattoos!

I want one!   I know what I want, but not sure where to get it!  I am a kindergarten teacher, so I don't want anything visible.  Like not on my foot, or ankle or back of my neck...etc.  I don't want it to be one I CAN'T show people either.    ;)   So just wondering if any of you have one in a unique spot.

Also, where did you get yours?   A friend is going with me - I live in Topsham and she's in Gardiner.  We're looking for somewhere around the area.  Probably furthest south would be Portland.

TIA!

  • Ohhh!  What are you going to get?!?!

  • Tom at Altered Image in Lewiston is awesome! He been an artist as long as I known him and then decided to use his skill tattooing. I have three and I teach. One is on the top of my foot but it is visiable to students when I wear sandels. I have a "tramp stamp" and I have one on my upper shoulder blade area that is never really visiable even when I wear my dress tank tops/dresses. The thing I love about Tom is he can design anything and tattoo it. My shoulder one is a tree of life but it is unique. I gave him three different pictures of the elements I liked and he drew his own. No one else has my tattoo. The same goes with the one on my foot which is a Gerber Daisy and my name in Japanese. He has done 4 of my husbands 7 tattoos.?

  • I am an elementary school teacher. I have the top of my foot tattooed, my ankle, my shoulder blade, another on my back and a half sleeve that is very visible. I actually checked with my district to see what the policy was on visible tattoos when I got my foot done. We have no policy and my kids always like looking at my tattoos. I have been to Altered Image in Lewiston. I believe Tom did a tattoo for me. The best place that I can recommend, and it's worth the drive since it is in Portland, is James at Fianna Studio. He is amazing. He did my half sleeve.  Here is his link http://www.facebook.com/FiannaStudio
  • I have 4, one on my foot (stars), my hip (stars), my lower back (Armenian cross) and the front of my shoulder blade (two daisies for the boys).

My high schoolers see my foot tattoo and my shoulder one if I wear tank tops or short sleeved dresses (I usually wear a cardigan but sometimes they slip and they can see it) and its not a big deal... but it was when the kids saw my tattoos at the afterschool program lol!  (not for my boss or the staff... but the kids would get really excited and fixated on them)

you could do your upper back like between your shoulder blades, ankle, or shoulder blades

  • I have four. I have a Celtic knot meaning sisterhood on my hip, a mother's love knot on my lower back ( tramp stamp, but I hate that term) with some swirled design. I have three butterflies in my left shoulder blade/ upper back that have the girls first initials as the body, as well as my and DH birth month  flowers next to them with the stems twining together to make a wedding knot. And a dragon fly in the center of my back that goes a little up my neck ( I have pics of the flowers/butterflies and the dragon fly on FB) All in spots that I can keep covered if needed ( unless I'm wearing a tank top!)

I had John Biswell do the flowers/butterflies, and it came out perfectly. He's a really nice guy and very talented artist. I know a couple other girls on here are fans of his as well. It was seeing the work he did on Shuga that made me want to work with him as well :)

Danielle Madore did my dragonfly, and I have an appointment with her in 3 weeks to start my next piece. She's really great to work with and designs some really amazing art. You can check her stuff out at Sanctuary Tattoo's website, they're in Portland. All the artists at Sanctuary are great. My dad just added to one that Ryan designed for him, and my best friend has worked with both Jen and Ryan and her pieces are amazing.

Can't wait to see what you decide to get!!!

  • My first tattoo, I got on my shoulder blade-- women tend to gain/lose weight less in that area so you don't get as many stretching/distorting issues with the image.

My other tattoo is on my ankle-- when I was teaching, I never showed my bare ankles (I always wore opaque tights or boots).

As for artists, I don't have any firsthand experience with artists in Maine; I know KClouts and Brianne have a favourite-- John something in Portland, I think?-- and I really like their tattoos' quality. Hygiene and art you like are basically the criteria for choosing someone, so definitely check out their galleries...

So exciting! Can't wait to see pics!

  • I have one on my ribs and on my shoulder (front and back).

You can probably guess that we are snobs about tattoo artists since Seth has about $10,000 worth of tattoos on his body.

I HIGHLY recommend Made Rite Tattoos on Exchange Street in Portland. John Biswell owns the shop (a few girls from  here have been to him). He also has an apprentice that is very talented. Her name is Gemma and she has been working for him for a little over a year. She will be doing my next tattoo.

Other than that I would say Sanctuary in Portland.

If you want to go north of Portland the only place I would recommend is Studio 201 in Farmingdale.

  • John Biswell at Made Rite Tattoos in Portland did mine and I am VERY happy with it.  The whole experience was great.

  • Awesome!  Thanks for the recs.   I think I'll call and see what they have available for appts. at Made Rite.   Good excuse for us girls to get lunch somewhere fun, too!   As far as where it goes, it's not about school policy or my students, it's a personal thing.   I just want it somewhere a little discrete.   I used to want one on my hip, but after having a baby and seeing where I stretched, I'm thinking that's a no-go!  :)
  • Exciting!  Do you have ideas of what you want to get?  I have a poppy on my lower back (tramp stamp).  It's kind of a boring place because no one ever really sees it, but it also looks the same as it did ten years ago, so that's a bonus.  I want to get an "M" tattoo somewhere sometime (for Marcus, Megan, and my dad, Mark), but I don't have any idea what I want it to look like, so I haven't committed.

  • Danielle Madore did my foot - it's a line of script and she hand wrote the font and shaped the line to wrap along my instep and up over my toes. I'm really happy with it and she was fantastic to work with.

My wrist was done by an apprentice at Tsunami, Beth, I believe, and the problem with my wrist tattoo was me, not her. I drew it and wanted what I drew, and I picked the placement wrong. It needs help and probably to be covered up eventually.

Placement, hmm. Well there is always lower back, or hip area. I want a tattoo on my shoulder - on top, in the bony area - but don't know what I want. I also want one on my rib cage. My current tattoos are pretty visible - wrist and foot - but also fairly easy to hide if I *need* to.

  • Jacki, I think of your tattoo on your foot a lot!  I love it.   The script is so pretty.   I'm getting words so I was really curious about where you had yours done.

I'm getting "dream a little dream" tattooed.   Then one big star with 7.7.07 under it (our wedding date) and a smaller star with Nolan's birthdate.    I figured this way I could add more stars and dates for however many children we end up having.   I'm also going to get a small paw print somewhere for my other baby.   :)

  • My brother has had all his tattoos done at Sanctuary and they are amazing (if not somewhat geeky) He has a full sleeve of the Pink Floyd the Wall album cover, a "big bang" scene with a t-rex that stretches from shoulder to shoulder and down his back and two Transformers on his calves... so if you can't get into Made Rite I would recommend them as well!

I like your idea... I want to have script put on my other foot but I can never find the time to do it since it took so long for my other foot to heal!

Annie, I got mine when I was 19 and in Bangor so that is clearly not going to help you.  I did get a rose on my left thigh. Its right smack in the middle of my thigh.  I love it there because I can show it or hide it.  At the time, I was working for my uncle who owns a catering business and I had seen soooo many brides with tacky tats showing with the cuts of their dresses.  I knew the back/shoulder area was not for me, specifically for that reason.  So that is why I chose my thigh.  I want another (or two) but I cannot justify the cost and I also would not know where to put a second! :)  anyway, HTH with placement of it
