How long do you usually wait when you go to a specialist?

The other week, I went to the gynocologist to get a check-up. I waited almost 3 hours. I like the place and the doctor but the idea of having to wait 3 hours every time to see her, would drive me crazy. The people in the waiting room told me that it was normal to wait at least two hours to see anyone from her team.

Is this typical to wait this long especially at the gynocologist?

  • 3 hours?! I've waited up to an hour multiple times but never three! Maybe it's just Spain?

  • Wow! The two specialists I've seen here took me in right away - I didn't even have time to sit down. The last time at my GP I waited an hour. More than an hour I would leave.
  • My dd has been seeing a pediatric neurologist since this summer, and we have gone 3 times, and never waited less than 2 hours. But there aren't many in Atlanta and he is the best so that is why. I would never wait 2 hours for a gyn appt.

  • One of my specialists told me to bring a book or my iPad, LOL. It's common to wait for around 2 hours to see her - but I plan my hospital trips to take a full day each time now, anyway.

I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!
  • For my old gyno I regularly had to wait an hour, but she had said it was because she's a woman and a lot of women prefer female gyns. She turned into a big jerk as a OB, so I switched to a male OBGYN on a recommendation and now wait between 5-15 min.

  • I just went to my Gyn last night and waited for the first time ever since starting to see him.  I see him every 3 months due to some issues with pain and trying to get on the correct medication.  Anyway I waited 15 min.  3 hours is insane.

Make an appt first thing in the morning or right after lunch when they are less likely to have backups.

  • I had to wait an hour after my appointment time to see a doctor in Santander and got really upset. She is a great, very popular, very thorough doctor so it was worth it in the end. I imagine this wait was for a private sector doctor?
  • It was in the private sector. The hospital is quite popular. The other people there said it didnt make a difference what time you made an apt. It was almost always two hours wait. Perhaps, next time I will ask for an apt. with a male doctor.

  • When I saw the fetal medicine specialists (pregnant with M) it was usually about 1-2 hours, 3 one time.

We've seen numerous specialists with M, and it's usually fairly quick - I'd say 30-45min? That said, the hospital is very busy, very well organised, and everything is broken down into segments to help the process. (It's a staged process: 15 min until vitals, then prob 45 on average to see the consultant, and then we have to wait to do urine checks after, so it is a full half-day process...)

  • I used to be anti man gyn, but my gyn is a man and I LOVE him.  We talked to him last night about TTC in about a year and he told us his partner in OB is also a man and I'm fine with it now.

  • I have waited almost 3 hours to see my GP, I usually have to wait an hour at least and yes I realise that it is just a GP, but I go to her for a reason. I finally have a relationship with a GP that I trust and she is thorough. If it is something small then I can just pick up the phone and she will prescribe what I am asking for without seeing us, which is great for James' skin. The problem is that she only works 2 days a week and has a great relationship with many patients so that is why it takes so long to see her.

  • I think once I waited 2 hours for a specialist but that was really unusual. My GP office has walk in appointments and I've never had to wait more than an hour for one.

If you're guaranteed a 3 hour wait I say show up at least 2 hours late. No one will be the wiser ;)

  • Hang on I can't tell...did you have an appointment or was it like a walk in situation?
  • I had an appointment. I was just wondering if this was normal because if I ever get pregnant, I want to find a good gynocologist. I like the place but the idea of waiting three hours each time sounds like hell. Perhaps, I will ask next time for a male doctor or show up an hour late.
