What, if anything, are you giving up for Lent?

I'm curious.  I have purged so much out of my life already this year that I'm having a difficult time giving up much else that is significant to me.  Maybe your ideas will open my heart and inspire me in my decision.

Re: What, if anything, are you giving up for Lent?

  • I'm giving up giving up stuff for Lent for Lent :)

But if I were a good Catholic, I'd probably try giving up cheese. I loooove cheese.

  • Sweets, junk food, and meat...I'm usually really good about giving up meat and only cheat occasionally for sweets/junk food.  Possibly giving up alcohol...I'm not sure if I can do that, though.  Confused  Maybe just limiting it a bit.
  • I think we will do the same thing as last year.  I put a quarter in the "rice bowl" every time I said a curse.  DH put in $1.  The kids put in $0.10 (age 8) and $0.05 (age 6) for saying words like "stupid," "moron," etc.  The money gets donated to a charity at the end of lent.

I was never big on doing things like "giving up soda," "giving up chocolate," etc.  I think it's better to make the world a positive place.  One year I bought groceries for the local food pantry every week.  $5 - $10 isn't a lot, but it's a nice amount at the end of six weeks!

You can also do things like practicing random acts of kindness, etc.

  • Last year I gave up alcohol.  It was hard, but I was proud of myself that I did it.  This year, I'm not sure what I'm going to give up (if anything).

  • I am giving up sugar (i.e. no sweets, candy, etc). I am going to be a B!tch the first week!

  • Pop and some kind of sweet. I haven't decided on that one yet. Maybe ice-cream???

  • Soda. It's going to be tough!

  • Fast food and junk food. I have been cutting back on fast food a ton because I am strictly budgeting (I drank the MM Kool-Aid), but I have been indulging a TON in junk food, and I need to stop!

I often give up meat, but I don't think I am going to do so this year.

  • Sex. Haha... although I'm already ahead of the game lol. Embarrassed

But in all seriousness, rather than giving up something, I found it easier for me to devote time and energy towards something good/rewarding... like volunteer opportunities, more time doing X, putting more measurable effort in Y, etc. It's kinda like a second chance at new year resolutions with a more religious/spiritual context.

I'm still thinking of what things I want to focus on that I could/should to either better my life or better the lives of others.
