help choosing a downtown Chicago hotel

For a night away for DH and I.  I dont want top of the line and spend $300+ for a basic room but I'm ok with spending $300 or so for a nicer/bigger room, maybe with a nice view.  Thoughts?  Suggestions??

Re: help choosing a downtown Chicago hotel

  • We stayed here over Labor Day and were very happy. It was a great location, easy to walk to just about everything and the room was a nice size.

  • I usually look for deals on Travelzoo for Chicago hotels. The Hyatt on Wacker usually has specials for $99-$124/night that include parking and is booked directly through the hotel. I've been happy with the location and the rooms - ask to be in the West Tower if you stay there. They don't have anything for the Hyatt at the moment but they do have the Marriott if  the dates line up for you.

  • I stayed at the Elysian (now the Waldorf-Astoria) over the summer.  It was a fantastic hotel and we paid less than $300 a night.  The rooms were very big, service was great, and the design is great.  It was just named the #1 hotel in America by Conde Nast Traveler, and I can see why.

I stayed on business at the Renaissance last March and it was more basic and business-y, but it was nice too.

  • We've really enjoyed The Westin Michigan Ave (I've always had good experiences at Westins). I would look online for special deals. Last year in Feb., we stayed for two nights. We got a Michigan Ave. view room and a parking pass for two days for less than $200 total (normally a standard, no-view room is around $180/night I think plus parking is $50/day). Lots of times, Starwood hotels have online-only deals that are really good.

It was a nice hotel, the beds are comfy, the staff is attentive, and it's in a really central location.

  • The James Hotel, hands down!  Affordable, mod-comfy rooms.  Very close to Michigan Ave for shopping.
  • I'd personally probably priceline a 4 star in a certain area I'd want to be in.

For views, I'd recommend the W Lakeshore, anything on the river (especially Sheraton and Westin), or something like the Swissotel.

We have gooten really cheap rooms at the Intercontinental on Hotwire. Once got a great price on a room with Swissotel with an online deal on their website. I liked the Swissotel out of the few I have stayed in.

This.  We've had really good luck getting very nice rooms for under $100/night on priceline

  • We usually stay at the Howard Johnson. It's a real POS but it is cheap, includes parking, and less than a 5 minute walk to Michigan ave. it's real close to that McDonald's of the future. It's a place to sleep. We prefer spending money on good food and fun stuff.
