Bronchitis, Mono, and my 5k

Hi All,

Yesterday I was diagnosed with bronchitis and was told that I have probably been fighting mono for the past 1.5 months (that's why I have been so tired, weak, and susceptible to every sickness that comes along). I have been working out through the mono so far, but obviously stopping when I came down really sick.

Has anyone had experience with mono? Is it ok to keep working out when you feel pretty good, but obviously not 100%?

I have a 5k in less than 2 months. Will I be able to race?

Oh, FWIW I told the doctor I'm a runner and he didn't say anything about restrictions. But he was running 1 hour late and didn't seem very interested in doing much at my appointment but loading me down with prescriptions and sending me out the door.

Thanks for your advice!

  • I'm sorry you're going through this! Man, I can't imagine having to suffer through mono by itself, let alone with other types of illness.

As far as activity goes, I'm not sure how wise it would be to continue to work out while you've got mono. If I remember correctly (from what I saw of kids w/mono when I was growing up) your liver and/or spleen are swollen, so physical activity could negatively affect that, especially if you bump into something.

I'm surprised your doc didn't mention anything like that to you.

  • I had mono in the 7th grade and I couldn't imagine working out while I was sick. Is your spleen swollen? After I was cleared to go back to school I had to wait two weeks before participating in any physical activity, gym class and basketball. This was because of the swollen spleen.

I would call your nurse advise line and ask them. You don't want to do more damage to your body or put it under extra stress. So, if I were you I'd rest it out. Depending on how far into your 5k trainin you are you can always run/walk it. There are lots of 5ks to participate in, you want to make sure you fully cure your illness, mono can persistent.

One a side note, have you looked into any naturopathic cures for mono? I'm not sure what i took, since I was 13, but there was a large series of vitamins and herbs that I took and it helped a lot. I was back to school in two weeks and totally better in 1 month. Something you might want to look into.

  • Thank you both for your advice. Since I had to go to an on-call doctor, I don't feel like he knew me or my history. I kind of feel like I got the "quick and easy" diagnosis without any testing or basis for what he said.

After hearing the severity of both of your experiences with mono, I think I will try to call my PCP and hear her advice. The doctor I saw yesterday didn't say anything about a swollen spleen or taking time off. Basically, he said I had bronchitis and gave me a prescription. I told him that I only had had bronchitis symptoms for the past 2 days but had been sick for 1.5 months. I asked him why he thought I had been sick for so long, and he said: "You probably have mono." Then he sent me out the door.

Argh - after only 3 days off I am already going crazy without working out. I need to know whether I am looking at weeks off, or just a few more days.

He should have given you a blood test to determine if you have mono or not. Deffinatly go see your PCP to get a proper diagnosis. Hope you feel better soon!

Ditto PP, when I had mono a couple years back, I was told absolutely no working out (6 weeks) and no lifting anything over 10lbs for the same amount of time. I was pulled from work and everything!

  • I'd go to your primary for a proper dx.  Mono isn't something to mess around with.  Sorry you feel crummy!  I had mono in college and it was AWFUL.
  • Thanks everyone! I'll get in touch with my PCP next week and I'll take it easy until then. I appreciate your advice!
  • When I had mono I wasn't able to get out of bed for months. I slept for all of 4 hours a day for weeks. My throat was so swollen I required steriod shots.

I was then put on bed rest because my liver and spleen were so enlarged that if I fell they feared they would rupture.
