WTH, Southwest?

Checked flights to Ft. Lauderdale on Tuesday, $345 rt. Same exact flights today, $455!

It's Florida, for God's sake, I'm not trying to fly to India!

A similarly timed flight on AirTran is $317, but I have a credit with Southwest I have to use or I lose it. I just hate the idea that my travel companion has to pay so much :-(

What are they thinking?

Re: WTH, Southwest?

  • Sometimes airlines will raise their prices for flights Fri-Sun because those are high traffic purchase days. Try checking the prices again next week Tues-Thurs.
  • friday for the weekend is one of the priciest times to fly, it's also a holiday weekend.

    can you dates be flexible?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

    This.

  • The dates I was looking at were leaving on Wednesday evening April 18 and coming back Monday evening the 23rd.

Unfortuantely, the dates aren't flexible due to accommodation availability, work schedules, and child care arrangements.

  • Fares are based on space and as the more people book the fare will increase.

I bet that people have been booking on the flights you checked and that is what has increased the cost.

Florida is a very popular in the spring.

They're thinking people will pay the higher fare.

Where are you flying out of? I got married last year on April 16th and we paid a fortune to fly from BOS to MIA to catch a flight a few days later. In New England it's April Vacation so flights are a nightmare to florida that week. But definitely wait until after 3pm on Tuesday to check again, just in case :)

Uh, not necessarily.  It is typical for flight prices to fluctuate.   As I suggested on a recent thread, use Yapta.com to track the price of the flights.  They may go back down into the $300s next week.  Set an alert so that you'll receive an e-mail when the cost drops.

  • farecast.com is good at predicting flight price trends.  tues/wed are typically cheaper days to buy tickets. (to buy on that day, not to buy for flights on that day)
