Myrtle Beach / Charleston suggestions?

Tell me about Myrtle Beach! We can fly there for DH's birthday at the end of April for about $400 r/t. It doesn't look like it's too far from Charleston, a town DH has always wanted to visit. I thought maybe we could spend a day or two in Myrtle Beach and drive to Charleston as well.

TIA!

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

  • I love Myrtle Beach! We always had such great family vacations there when I was a kid. I haven't been for a few years and I've heard it's changed a lot. My parents always stayed at The Breakers. It's beachfront and has a great kiddie pool.

Make sure you check out Broadway at the Beach. There's a great aquarium there, lots of good restaurants, and shops. You can also get online and request a "Stay and Play guide" from the local Chamber of Commerce.

  • I love Myrtle Beach.  I haven't been in about 2 years, but it's a great vacation.  There are a ton of touristy things to do, as well as off the beaten path things.  It's a good mix.  Like PP said, Broadway at the Beach is fun.  Very touristy, but they have a lot of restaurants and little cheesy shops.  Definitely fun for at night.  We've stayed at various places.  My favorite was the condos that are owned by The Caravelle (Carolina Dunes).  They're right on the beach!  Perfect location.

In terms of proximity to Charleston - I don't think it's that close.  We talked about doing that drive, but it's about 2 hours.  After a full day in the sun, on the beach - it's not really worth it. Unless you're going to split your vacation and do half in one and half in the other, it's a far trip for dinner.

  • If you do not want to make the drive to Charleston you could always check out Wilmington. Very small and charming like Charleston but only a hour from Myrtle.

DH used to live there and took me on a mini trip there I loved it, I have been to Charleston also and liked it more than Wilmington just because there is more to see.

  • Ditto, Charleston is 2 hrs away and not worth it unless you are staying the night.  it is a fun and historical town, but no beachy by any means.  You will have plenty to do in Myrtle, but if you are wanting to explore Charleston, I'd recommend staying there.  You can always book a hotel in Mt. Pleasant across the bridge and drive to the island if you don't want to splurge for a hotel in Charleston.

If you do drive from Myrtle to Charleston, take the by-pass! You don't want to get stuck driving south in beach traffic.

  • I'm going to go against the grain here and suggest that you fly into Myrtle Beach, spend an afternoon there and spend the rest of the time in Charleston. MB is a rundown dump, imo. It's very Daytona-ish in my opinion (not a good thing), I definitely think that one day there is plenty. It has none of the charm or sophistication of Charleston.

Like PP suggested, you could stay somewhere in Mt. Pleasant as opposed to downtown Charleston, it's a quick 10-15 minute drive to downtown depending on where in MTP you stay. Also, a quick 15, 20-minute drive from downtown Charleston are some gorgeous beaches--Sullivan's Island and the Isle of Palms are our favorites. But yeah, Charleston blows Myrtle Beach away any day-the great shopping, the historical homes and sites, the incredible restaurants. MB is quite kitschy and way past its prime (imo) and just doesn't hold a candle to CHS.
