Hi... I posted here a few times when I was job searching but mostly lurk. I ended up finding a job that I love - my bosses are fantastic, and I don't work crazy hours as many in my field do.
The problem? I am someone who wants to be busy constantly. When I'm not, I feel an immense sense of guilt, a little bit of sadness and sometimes concern that my job isn't important. Truthfully my fears are irrational - I have spoken to my bosses about it and they have assured me that I'm doing great work and that I'm needed here (I had a review recently), it's just the nature of the job that there are peaks and valleys, so to speak. I tell them when I'm slow (like now) and that's all I can do.
I guess I'm looking for reassurance that some downtime is normal - I'm not often bored, but there are days like today where I literally have one thing to finish that will take about 20 minutes and that's it. I'm also looking for advice on productive things to do with my downtime other than..umm..posting on the nest. Thanks!

I think that's completely normal to feel that way! I think no matter what the job title is, you're definitely going to have spurts of down time! In fact, I believe that the "higher" up on the totem pole that you get, the less "work" you actually do!

Downtime is perfectly normal. There's a rare job that doesn't have it at one point or another.
Find some back-burner projects you can work on when you're slow. Talk to your bosses about taking on extra things during that time. The more they see you asking for extra work (even if they don't have any), the more they'll see you being proactive about things around the office.

When I worked in the business world, I had lots of downtime. My boss encouraged us to learn something new or improve a process/document. When that work was done, we were free to roam the internet. My boss even let me do my homework for my MBA while I was at work. It was great!
Now that I'm teaching, there's rarely any downtime. Even if the students are taking a test or are working on a project and don't need my intervention, I've always got more grading or projects to work on. The only "downtime" I have each day is the 20 minutes I get for lunch!
I've had jobs in the past where there are some slow times. We have internal company training you can do. Is there anything like that?
If it was for a longer period of time (more than just a day or two), I would probably see if there was some type of class I could do, or even book I could read that would help improve my skills that apply to my job.
I have a lot of downtime too every once in a while (usually at the end of the day). If you have a smart phone and like to read books, you can download nook or kindle apps for free and buy books through your phone, I've actually found that I love reading books between projects/patients/reports (I used to never have time to read).
Also, I tend manage my finances and read the news, or study if I'm taking classes.
I can totally relate. I feel super guilty when I have downtime! Just remember to challenge those thoughts and know that what you do is enough. Sometimes it helps when I compare myself to my other colleagues that never go above and beyond and this helps remind me that if they continue to keep their job and get average performance reviews I am in great shape!
In terms of suggestions for downtime is there continuing education options for you? For instance, articles/books/magazines in your field that you can read during downtime to continue to educate yourself? Perhaps even some online trainings? It also keeps you up to date on cutting edge areas of the field which will help you inform your colleagues of new trends.
