clicky poll: imigration officers and the like.
i know nothing about this and just wanted to know your opinion[Poll]

we're having twins!
Re: clicky poll: imigration officers and the like.
I may have ruined the poll.. do you mean pull you over while driving? or to see your green card/resident status.
If it's for your green card/resident status yes they can ask to see it. I have to carry mine in my wallet 24/7 for this reason.

I'm going to say Yes, because if they see suspicious activity they still have the right to uphold the law so to speak.

I could be wrong, but I think it depends on what each individual state's laws are, and Washington has pretty lenient ones for illegal immigrants. For example, I'm pretty sure Washington is one of only a few states in the US that will issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants (a few years back it was NY, WA, and NM, but I know NM was considering repealing that).
As for immigration stops - given that Washington has a lenient policy on driver's license issuance and a Democratic majority in the government, my guess would be that it is illegal for a police officer to ask for proof of citizenship when making routine traffic stops. If you're arrested, I think it's standard to confirm proof of citizenship / residency, and I think deportation processes is pretty standard for any illegal immigrant convicted of a crime.
I know a few years ago Arizona passed a very controversial law that allowed police to ask for proof of legal residency in the US for anyone who was stopped during a routine traffic stop - you couldn't pull the individual over *just* to ask for papers, but you could ask for papers if you cited them for a traffic infraction (at least, I think that was the case). Arizona tends to have a very conservative political base and this was in response to some escalating violence along the border where US Citizens were getting shot and killed (in one case, on their own property) by illegal immigrants crossing the border. The Obama administration had been challenging this Arizona law in court; I'm not sure if a final ruling has been made on whether or not this violated individual civil rights (the concern was that it led to racial profiling and discrimination, if I recall correctly), but it certainly was a contentious issue.
I couldn't get my WA drivers license until I had proof of residency - my green card and SS. They ask for your SS, so I'm not sure.. unless they don't check to see if the SS # is valid.

Huh - maybe they changed the laws. I know there were lots of strong opinions on both sides of the fence regarding driver's license laws. Or maybe they just saw you and thought you looked particularly suspicious?
haha
Not sure about that
ETA: I'm pretty sure when I went to apply they asked to see my current DL which was from out of state so then they asked to see proof of residency.

I think that's the biggest thing - which you can easily produce with SS or Green Card. I just did a quick internet search because I was curious if they had changed the law (esp. since it's been a Democratic-dominated government in recent years) and it looks like they haven't, but they have tightened up their requirements for proof of residency. New Mexico is currently trying to pass a law that would ban issuing DL's to illegal immigrants, which would then make WA the only state that does this.
Proof of residency is not the same as proof of citizenship/legal immigration status. Residency is just showing you've lived her x amount of time, which you can do with a lease agreement, utility bills, etc.
There was a major news story several months back about illegal immigrants, and a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist recounted how he got a WA state DL...and then in another state was able to use that to then get accepted as "legal" even though he actually wasn't.
Sorry my bad.. I should say proof of immigration status, because I had to have my Green card and SS #.
I'm sure that if you really wanted there is ways around it and the illegal immigrants are sure to find those loop holes if they need too!

No, they cannot stop you in a car and ask for your papers. They have no authority to conduct a traffic stop at all, unless it is immigration-related, I'm pretty sure. And no one (police, FBI, etc.) can stop you in a car for no reason--at least not in WA.
AZ tried this (actually if someone was stopped for other reasons, law enforcement was supposed to ask for proof of citizenship) and there was big back-lash, arguments that it was unconstitutional and those portions of the law were found to be unconsitutional.
I believe in some/most states you cannot get a driver's license if you are not lawfully here, however, you can in WA.
