I was an EMT, but I did work at a hospital in a CNA-type role before nursing school. I hated it, to be honest. I found it dull and easy, and I don't like doing baths, feeding people, etc, which is most of that job.
Typical day in the hospital:
7a-8a getting report, taking vital signs
8a-11a doing bed baths, checking intake and output, changing beds, restocking, straightening patient rooms (housekeeping cleans but does not straighten)
11a-noon vital signs again, blood sugars
noon-2p helping people eat, setting up trays, intake and output again
2p-3p anything you missed before
3p-4p vital signs again, blood sugars again
4p-7p anything you missed before
Interspersed is bedpans, bedside commodes (again, you wash these out), admissions, more vital signs if the patient isn't doing well, blood sugars every hour if the patient is on insulin, getting people drinks/snacks, and charting all of the above. You may do very basic wound care.
From what I saw of CNAs during nursing school, it doesn't really help except you're more comfortable doing bed baths, changing linens, and doing vital signs. CNA work is not about understanding why you're doing something or the results, but just doing it and reporting it to the nurse. Knowledge-wise, it doesn't do much at all.
CNAs in nursing homes/rehab facilities are grossly underpaid and overworked, and none of that work is glamorous.
