Rachel Ray is stressing me out!

I'm not bashing her recipes, I've tried a few. Some were good, some were meh. Either way- this episode where she is making a "Chicken Cordon Bleu Plate Special" is stressing me out.

She has like 7 pots on the stove, multitasking like crazy and keeps doing complicated steps without explaining it. Yeah. 30 minute meal, great for beginners my arse!

I can't turn it off. This may be the episode that she doesn't finish the meal. *fingers crossed*

Re: Rachel Ray is stressing me out!

  • I had to turn the TV on (since I can...haha) to see what you were talking about since it's been years since I've watched her.

I don't know how she makes these meals in 30 minutes. The only time I've ever made a meal in that amount of time was when I prepped everything in the morning/night before and just cooked it. I think she gets WAY more done over the commercial breaks then the actual time of the break (does that make sense?)

I watched a behind the scenes thing where they said her assistants come in over break to get the stuff ready.

I knew it was too good to be true. She had to either have help or have everything prepped in advance.

  • Well, she also can heat her oven to 500 degrees in like 3 minutes and bring a pot of water to boil in about 4.

I swear there was a blog or something where people made her recipes and then documented how long they actually took.

Where does Hot Dog Salad fall on the good-meh scale? Stick out tongue

I remember reading something about someone taking at least 45 minutes to make her 30 minute meals. One of her recipes on the food network page actually says 38 instead of 30 or less.

I was at a taping of her talk show once and saw her make food. She placed the sandwich on the grill and then went to commercial break. During the break, the food was swapped out with ready made stuff from the back.

so who knows how long it actually takes to make it!

I just googled hot dog salad. That was a mistake. WTF is she thinking?

  • I agree-I made her Everything Lo Mein last year, and while the recipe itself wasn't bad, it took freaking forever to make. Same with the Thai Peanut Pizza (which both DH and I considered "meh," and he's the ultimate Thai-peanut sauce guy).

  • 30 minutes is definitely misleading.  Her portions are way off too.  We do have several recipes of hers that we do like, though.

  • I have tried only a few of her recipes, but every single one has been meh for me.  I was looking at her cheeseburger mac and cheese the other day (someone may have made it on their blog. can't remember for sure) it had 1 1/2 pounds of meat and a pound of pasta and it said serves 4.  Holy crap.

Holy crap. I guess nothing is sacred anymore. Not even the term 'hot dog salad.' [shudder]

I would love to see this!

I will admit that several years ago, when I got engaged and realized I really didn't know how to cook and was afraid for DH to find out (lol), Rachael's "30 minute meals" appealed to me. I tried a lot of her recipes (and liked them) but felt like an idiot for taking so long to make them.  Well if you're a new cook, just slicing veggies and doing other prep work is going to take 15 minutes! Surprise

  • I rarely watch anything with her on it anymore, but I remember seeing her get mad at people during Q&A sessions when they would mention that they never seemed to be able to make her recipes in 30 minutes.  She was always very abrupt and mumbled stuff about 30 minutes just being a  'general term'.

Hmm Huh?  I thought it was the name of the show/book because you could get it done in that amount of time.  She was really obnoxious about it.

  • When I first moved into my own apartment, I too fell into the 30 minute trap. I also call it the "buy a bunch of ingredients I may never use again" trap. There are many Rachael recipes we enjoy. Any new ones I try now I tend to really tweak. Sometimes she just throws way too much in these "simple" dishes.
