Denver, Longmont, and/or Granby, CO in July

We'll be flying into Denver and visiting family in Granby for sure, and possibly Longmont.

Looking for activities or restaurant recommendations in any of these places, and hotels in Denver because I think we'll spend a night or two there. As far as activities, we're kind of limited because we don't like hardcore hiking and we'll have a 14-month-old in tow, but any suggestions are appreciated. We love horseback riding (can leave the LO with family for a few hours), fishing, short hikes, etc. Thanks!

Re: Denver, Longmont, and/or Granby, CO in July

  • I lived in Longmont for the past 10 years, but just moved to Iowa.  I SO miss it! There are some great activities and restaurants around- especially if you like food and microbrews.  In the summer definitely go to the city website or google before you go to see what festivals are going on- there is ALWAYS something going on- art fests, beer hests, etc.  Definitely check out www.yellowscene.com).

As far as restaurants in Longmont go to:

The Pumphouse (old fire house- now a restaurant and brewery) Ther pitas with spinach dip is to die for!

Lucille's for breakfast.  Sit inside or outside.  GREAT creole breakfasts and lunch- with a twist.  AWESOMENESS.

Seven West is fun if you sit on the rooftop deck.  Food is high average with pizza and basic appetizers, but fun to sit on the roof and get drinks and dinner.

Proto's Pizza is yummy and different.

Oskar Blues is pretty good too.  Brewery and good southern-style food.

In the mood for BBQ- The Rib House in Prospect.  Very casual. This is a very different, ultra-modern neighborhood in Longmont. At least just drive through and check it out. Little shops there too.

While in Longmont, definitely take a tour of Lefthand Brewery.  My all-time favorite watering hole with REALLY good beer- small, but now nationally known and served.  Totally ok to take a kid on this by the way.  Not a rowdy bar scene... No food available here.  We actually had our rehearsal dinner here.

You can also do a brewery tour at Oskar Blues brewery (aka the The Tasty Weasel).  Again- pretty kid friendly- looks like an old warehouse on the outside, but a huge factory inside with a tasting room.

I used to work at the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center- GREAT for kids- hands-on activities and exhibits highlighting the geographical region, native americans, pioneers, etc.

The Longmont Rec Center has a climbing wall and great indoor pool with slides.

There are excellent walking/biking trails in town- nice and flat and along the St. Vrain River.

Walk the trail around Golden Ponds.  Easy, flat walk.

    Google Sunflower Farms

LOTS of parks and greenways with playgrounds for the kids.  Also LOTS of pools- I thik there are at least 5 public pools in town that you can go swim in.

Of course Boulder is only a 10-15 minute drive away with TONS more to do... that is a whole another post.  And Fort Collins is 30 minutes away which is also fun.  Estes Park is a mountain town only 30 minutes away- great tourist "trap" town with lots of shopping.  The great Trail Ridge Road is there at the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park.  GREAT drive to the top in July and makes a perfect day trip with lots of beautiful scenery. Also the Stanley Hotel from The Shining.

I am sure I will think of more later and chime in again...

  • Oh...see!  I told you I would be back.  My husband is a big fisher.. in Longmont area: Golden Ponds, Isaak Walton Pond, Union Reservoir, Coot Lake, Boulder Reservoir  :) Many more around though.
  • Thank you so much! I'll take any advice you've got on Boulder and Fort Collins, too, if you think they're worth the trip. My SIL used to live in Estes Park, so I should ask her about that area, too.

  • Sure- I would say they are both worth it.  Beautiful and lots to do.

Boulder- Celestial Seasonings Tour is fun and kid-friendly, walk the Pearl Street Mall (This is a must to get the true Boulder experience), CU Boulder campus, shop at 28th street mall (outdoor) , eat breakfast or get tea and coffee at the Dushanbe Tea House (Google it), drive around- go up Canyon and Baseline and drive in the foothills and take pictures. There are many other excellent bars and restaurants along Pearl Street. Lot os goodhiking, but you need to be active and into hiking as the trails are fairly difficult considering the elevation if you are not used to it.

Fort Collins- Colorado State campus, walk around "Old Town".  I LOVE Coopersmith's Restaurant and Brewery.  There are several nationally known breweries all along the same road- Fort Collins Brewery, New Belgium, O'dells, etc.  It is fun to walk between them and sample brews.  BeauJo's Pizza is also good and has been featured on the Food Channel.  The Rio is known for their GIANT margaritas. Walrus ice cream shop.

  • Thank you again! We are huge drinkers, so Boulder looks like a good stop for us. The Dushanbe tea house looks amazing!
