Passport with maiden name?

When I first got my passport, I wasn't married. Fast forward 4 years and DH and I are thinking of going to Niagara Falls this summer. Will I have a problem since my license says my married name and the passport is my maiden? If I need to get my passport changed, do you know of a website that I can visit for the info? TIA

Re: Passport with maiden name?

  • Yes. The US State Department

And if you've been married less than a year, it should be free.

  • i've been married for 6 years and i haven't changed my passport yet, but did change my license and had traveled out of the country 5 times.  as long as the name on the plane ticket matches the passport, you will be fine.  no one needs to see 2 forms of id.
  • I should have included we'd be driving to Canada since its only a few hours away from us. How much of a difference does that make?

It's only free if the passport was issued within the last year.  If it has been more than a year they charge the renewal fee. :(

I used mine in my maiden name for about a year/eighteen months (it expired two years after) after our wedding.  I had work travel that was booked in my maiden name and no time  that I could be without it long enough to send it in.  This was in the middle of the everyone needs a passport and long processing times.   As long the name I booked in matched my other travel docs (flight info) I didn't have a problem.

Driving into Canada the agent only looked at our passports (Niagara falls and Vancouver in the last six months)

  • Here is the link to the Dept. of State for passport name change.

Unfortunately, the change will not be free.  It's only free within one year of issue, not within one year of marriage.

If you plan to use it a lot after this time, I would probably just change it.  If not, I would say whether you change it or not depends on whether or not you will be the one in the driver's seat when you cross the border.  That's the only reason I can think that they would ask for both your DL and PP.

FWIW, I have been traveling in my maiden name for the past 1.5 years with no problems, including applying for visas.  I only just now changed it because I need more pages.

  • Like PP, I've been traveling with my passport in my maiden name for 2 years. As long as all travel is booked in that name, you should be fine.

  • Bring your marriage certificate just to be on the safe side.

  • There isn't need to get your name changed on your passport and there isn't a need to bring your marriage certificate. They don't ask for your driver's license when you cross the border, just your passport. It doesn't cease being valid because your name has changed. I lived on that border for two years before I changed the name on my passport. I drove across the border probably a hundred times with my passport in my maiden name and my license and car registered in my married name. I never had any problems.
  • If you are just driving across the border, you will be fine.  I think the only scenario I can think of where traveling under your maiden (and not 'legal') name would be an issue is if you lost your passport and had to go to a foreign consulate to get clearance to travel home, but even then, I'm sure this situation isn't completely unheard of to them and they probably have a fairly easy process for that.

travel.state.gov has all the information you need for passports.

  • You only need your passport to travel by car to Canada.  You can go, as is, with your maiden name.  It won't be an issue as long as its not expired.

You do not have to get a new passport with your married name until your current one expires.  If you fly or cruise somewhere you will need to book in the name on your passport until you get a new one.

  • I was just talking about this with a co-worker but mine is in my married name and I am now divorced.   I just book in my married name until the passport expires.

  • You will be fine if you book your ticket in whatever your passport says.  You can just use your passport and not license as an ID.  Have fun!
