Movers... questions.

1. Did you have them move your china?  Or did you do it yourself?  I've already packed it (the settings are spread out in a few different boxes) but wonder if that was a bad move....

2. If you tipped your movers- how much?

Any other packing advice? :)  We're moving Sunday.  TONS of packing still to do.  UGH.

Re: Movers... questions.

  • 1. I had them do it.  If you're having them do a full pack, and if I were you, I'd unpack it so they can pack it themselves (feel free to "hover" while they're doing so).  If they pack it, it's covered in case of breakage.  If you pack it and it breaks, tough noogies.  So, unless you are able to do all the moving of it yourself, let them pack EVERYTHING for your $$ protection.

    2. We tipped $20 per person for the helpers per day at the pack/load end and $20 per helper at the unpack end.  We tipped our driver $100.

  • I have been packing for the last few weekend too.  My advice is that if you just can't stand for something to happen to it, pack it and take it yourself.  Our "movers" are friends and family so we have to be especially careful.  I have a room deticated to boxes that I will take care of myself.

As far as tips, I have used professional movers before and I tipped them 20 dollars each, it was an in town 1 day job, and I keep some beer on hand because they have always wanted a few twords the end of the job.  Even if they just take a few with them, any kind of movers want a beer after all that work!  :)

Good luck, hope it goes well.

  • We didn't hire movers. We just had family and friends but whatever I was worried about we took over ourselves in an earlier trip. We "paid" our friends in pizza and beer.

  • We moved our own china and anything else super breakable/valuable. The movers were there, primarily to haul the heavy furniture, etc.  We also tipped them $20 pp.  Good luck with the move!

  • We let them pack it.  They had to pack it for it to be insured.

We tipped $10 per person per hour of packing, loading and unloading.
