Australia Nesties help please!

We're headed to Australia next month and I'm trying to figure out what type of mobile internet I should get. I found this from Telstra:

Do you know if that would work? We're going to New Zealand as well and I'd like to use it both places if possible. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Re: Australia Nesties help please!

  • Do you mind me asking how long will you be here? Are you coming for a vacation or will you be living here? My answer will vary based on your answer.

I use a Telstra prepaid phone. It was $50 and about once a month I get a $30 credit. Honestly, I don't call too many people here and all my long distance calling is done through Skype. I use my phone as a way to call DH, a few friends and to schedule doctors appointments.

  • I don't know anything about phone service in NZ so I don't know if a phone from here would work there. I know you can buy phones that are supposed to work internationally though.

I use a Virgin prepay phone that I get pretty much the cheapest monthly package on ($19) - it has plenty of data for my needs for internet usage.

The phones themselves vary in price and features and also whether you are going prepay or on a monthly contract - you can get a fairly decent prepay smart phone for about $79.

  • Hello! I will be in Australia for 2 weeks then NZ for 1 week. I really just need internet access for my laptop - so I'm looking to purchase a mobile USB internet thing. That Telstra had one for $79 and included 3GB of data. Then I'm hoping I can just plug in that USB to my laptop and check work E-mails. I believe I'll be able to  use this in NZ if I pay for the international version.

    Thanks for any help!

Also, the cities we're going to in AU is Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne - any tips there would be appreciated too! I'm SO excited!!

  • I'm sorry, I assumed you were looking for a mobile phone provider. Honestly, I've never used an Internet USB plug. Actually I used one through work but I never had to arrange it through an Internet provider. Depending on where you are staying you maybe able to get internet through the hotel and then you wouldn't have to worry about a device working in AU and NZ.

I'm in Brizzy. I'm happy to give some tips. I would go to SouthBank, for fun and food. They have a man made beach and plenty of green space to just relax. There are so many restaurants for every budget. If you are going to head to the beach while here I would go to Noosa Heads. There are plenty of beaches; Surfers Paradise, the Gold Coast and Noosa Heads. I like them all but prefer the Noosa area. April will be a little cooler so maybe you won't get in the water but it's still nice to see the beach. Let me know if you would like more information.

  • I have telstra 3G for the ipad and telstra again for my work laptop. There are a variety of providers (Virgin, dodo, optus, iinet, internode) but the best coverage by far is on Telstra.

Whilst most hotels will have wifi it can be super expensive (last time I was in Sheparaton for work the hotel charged $27/day for internet access!). Also as soon as you hit NZ the internet will either stop working (because I don't think prepaid supports overseas) or will cost you a fortune because overseas data usgae wont be included in the $79 plan.

  • Thanks! We're in AU for the majority of the time - so perhaps I'll just do that and if I HAVE to, just use the hotel's in NZ. Thanks so MUCH for your feedback! I really appreciate it and it's so nice to have somebody from there able to help!
