Sticky refrigerator mess

Somehow we've ended up with a red sticky refrigerator mess under where the bottom drawers slide in.  I'm not sure what it is but it reminds me of "red lollipop" -- hardened & stubborn.  I got the majority of it out by picking out the hard pieces but there is still a gooey ring/staining.  What can you think of that might break this down?  The problem is I can't scrape it-- our kitchen is very tiny & the door to the fridge doesn't open wide enough to take out both bottom drawers. A sponge or rag will fit under the drawer. I'm hoping I can wipe it away with a sponge after I dissolve it with something.

Re: Sticky refrigerator mess

  • Pull the fridge out just enough to get the drawers out so you have full access.

Once the drawers are out, lay a hot wet rag or paper towels over the gooey mess and leave for 30 minutes. It should wipe right out. If you need to scrub a little, use baking soda or barkeepers friend.

  • Thank you! Will try.  I love barkeepers friend.  Didn't think about using it here.
  • The last time I had a sticky mess in the fridge I just laid a wet, hot, soapy (Dawn) rag on it while I cleaned the rest of the fridge.  By the time I was done it cleaned pretty easily.

  • Well, when I make red lollipops, I use baking soda to get the hardened candy off the pans. It will probably work on your fridge (it also works really well on greasy stovetops). Sprinkle the soda generously on top, then use a hot, wet washcloth and a little elbow grease to scrape the mess off. If the surface is plastic or glass (don't try this on metal), you can use a little vinegar too. The fizzing will help take the mess off.
A second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience.
  • I encountered a similar mess when I deep cleaned my parents' fridge a couple weeks ago.  After I go the majority of the gunk off I sprayed Method Kitchen Anti-Bac on and let it sit while I cleaned all the drawers and everything else.  I had to soak, wipe, repeat a couple times but I didn't have to use too much elbow grease - Clean Smart, Not Hard! aahaha
  • IF U HAVE ALREADY CLEANED THE MESS AND STILL HAVE THE STAIN IN YOUR FRIDGE TRY MEAN GREEN, IT GET OUT STAINS EVERYWHERE. U CAN FIND IT @ YOUR LOCAL $ STORE
