  • This is so sad.  My heart breaks for that poor child.  I also in a way feel sad for the mother.  She obviously had emotional issues, including PPD, and she was not able to receive the help she desperately needed.  While I don't know if it's really appropriate for me to criticize, if she was suicidal prior to this incident and was diagnosed with PPD, why was she left alone with that poor child?  Not that I want to point fingers at this time, but this was the first thought that popped in my mind after reading this article.

The stigma against seeking care for mental illnesses is still so strong that I think many people are afraid to reach out and sometimes families have a hard time seeing and/or accepting that their loved one needs vert serious intervention.  I'll tell you that in DH's work, if he were to even seek short-term counseling for depression, it would affect his medical clearance and would have a potentially detrimental long-term impact on his career trajectory.  It makes people think twice about seeking help when they shouldn't have to.

  • Luckily, they found the mother at the airport. I feel so sorry for the father and poor little baby. I have never experienced PPD and do not know much about it but I know that my pediatrician and OB both ask me personal questions at mine and Lila's visits to see if I am experiencing any symptoms. What a horrible thing to happen to a child.

They found her trying to jump from the parking garage but she didn't b/c there was too many people. The said thing is she will probably get off b/c of the PPD.

Hopefully that's not the case.  She needs serious help.  In the very least, she'll be in custody and in treatment while she is arraigned and awaiting trial so her other child will be safe and they will hopeful be able to figure out what role PPD might have played and whether or not she can be rehabilitated in the long term or if they need to throw away the key (as I wish they could have done with someone like Casey Anthony).  This is certainly an unspeakable tragedy.
