Not H&F: which swim suit?? PIPs

Down almost 50 pounds from my heaviest, I'm looking for a suit that will work for this summer, as my old one doesn't fit (in a good way!).  I'm still not comfortable with my body, but I'd like to be able to enjoy time with family, including swimming in the lake with my niece and nephews this summer and hanging out on the dock with adult family members around.  This doesn't need to be a "look at me" suit, I'm looking for more of a nondescript, family friendly suit.

Which of these looks most interesting to you?  I'm at the top end of regular sizing, with a large bust, and I'm self conscious of my upper thighs due to stretch marks.  I'd welcome any other suggestions too, and I'd love to look good and pay less than this because I would hope that by next summer it won't fit again, as I'll be close to goal weight.

A. Macy's (~$110 for top and bottom)

  • Steer clear of the top one if you have a large bust.

    I guess I like C the best.

I can't resist stripes, despite knowing what they visually do is so bad. =(

  • I like C the best, BUT, if it is only for one summer as you are half-way with your weight loss, personally, I'd go with a MUCH less expensive suit.

Have you checked the Target site?

  • Honestly, I don't really like any of them.  I am not a fan of skirt suits....I think they don't do much for hiding anything and get in the way while you are in the water.   If I were you, I'd get a simple suit in a plain color (Land's End makes really nice ones) and a couple fun sarongs to tie around your waist while hanging out on the docks or even a pair of board shorts.
  • I think if you want to draw attention to your hips you wear a swimsuit with a skirt. Say no to suits with skirts.  Suits with ruching can do wonders for your body. And there are some very cute vintage insprired suits out there that are much cuter than your options.
  • I don't like ones with skirts. Have you considered a solid color or do you prefer patterns?

But to answer your question A or B. C is nice, but I'm not a fan of the pattern.

  • I like #2.  I have found the ones like #3 to look like an inappropriately small and tight dress - not flattering.  I do have a cute one like #2 that is shorts on the bottom that I like and would help with thigh stretch mark issues.  I'd say look into variations of #2.

ETA:  The tight dress comment is from my own one piece suit that is similar and can go down into a skirt style on the bottom - not that I don't like it on the model.

  • Those are cute suits, but for a similar price, I would look at Lands End.  I have a couple of tankinis from there and they are great.  I like that I can order a different size top and bottom if necessary.
  • I vote for B :)

  • I like B, and I am another vote for looking at Land's End. Congratulation on having the problem of having to buy another bathing suit!! Big Smile
  • Have you looked on eBay?  I bought my suit for this year on there.  It's a lane bryant suit (which is sized by bra size since I'm big on top also and can't fit into the "regular" suits I've tried on).  I got it for a small fraction of retail and since I'll only wear it one summer (since I'm also expecting to lose more this year) and I couldn't bear paying full price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/370580270234?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_500wt_1202  This is the one I just bought - I had the same one last year (in a much bigger size) and it's very flattering.  There are several others similar on ebay right now that are cute and many are new.

For bottoms, I plan to get something at Target or Old Navy.  Skirts have never done anything positive for me, so I agree with the others re:skirts.  I am considering the new swim shorts I've seen (they are basically bikini bottoms with short shorts in swim suit material over them).  I have seen them at Target and Just My Size.  They also cover the problem inner thigh area, but seem slightly better than skirts...but maybe not.

Pretty much this.  I have stretch marks on my hips and thighs, so of course I want to hide them, but I prefer a pair of board shorts to the whole skirt thing.  I get the coverage that I need, but don't look like a grannyWink

ETA: of the choices though, I like C the best

  • I like B.

I ordered a ton of suits from Lands End before I found the one I kept. The good thing about ordering from them is that you can return them to any Sears store at any time. Plus, they have overlapping regular and women's sizes. If you're at the upper-end of the regular sizes, consider the same suit in the plus-size too. I found the W sizes to be more comfortable with more room in the bust and better straps. Ignore the label and get what fits! (this was very hard for me to get over)

I totally understand wanting a skirt and I'm right there with you. I'm self-conscious and wanted my thighs covered at all times.

I also recommend getting one with a V-neck top. They seem to be more flattering for larger busts.
