First trip to Boston

I'm going to Boston to watch my mom run there marathon and we're looking for other things to see. I've never been before so I'm looking for the "must see" things to see there, particularly the historic sights. Normally we'd be up for tons of walking but since our "tourist time" will be though couple days before the marathon, we're trying to keep the walking to a couple miles a day.

My aunt is also coming with us and brought up the idea of driving out to Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard for a day trip - is this worth it? TIA!

  • Marathon weekend in Boston is so fun! There is a lot going on but so many people in town though. Where are you staying?

In my opinion, a trip to the Cape and/or Vineyard isn't going to be enjoyable in April. We have had such a mild winter, so you could see what the weather is like.

The freedom trail is a great historic walk. You could check out the website to choose some historic sites to see so that you don't have to walk the whole thing.

Not sure if you're a sports fan, but that is usually one of the first weekends Fenway is open for the season. Definitely worth a tour at the least and possibly a Sox game.

Ditto all of this. There's a lot to see on the Freedom Trail, but you could pick and choose the things you really want to see to limit your walking time. Also, definitely go for a tour of Fenway. It's $12 or $13 for a 90ish minute tour and with the 100th anniversary this year, they'll probably have some special things going on. Tickets will probably be super hard to come by for a game that weekend, but if you're baseball fans, it's probably worth trying to see if you can get tickets. The Sox are always home that weekend. Have fun!

Thanks! This link was just what I was looking for.

The marathon is in the middle of April. With how the weather's been, it sounds like it should be pretty nice. We're staying at the Best Western Roundhouse (Roxbury neighborhood?, near Boston Medical Center). Thanks for the baseball recommendation too. I'll have to look into it.

  • Best Western Roundhouse... kind of a sketchy neighborhood... I'm sure all of the hotels that weekend are either booked, or expensive, but that's not a part of the city that is easily walkable...

  • Thanks for saving me the c&p work, Dr.L :)
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball
