Rome, Italy - Skip the line tours?

Can anyone recommend a "skip the line" tour for Rome? (specifically the colosseum and vatican?

thanks

Re: Rome, Italy - Skip the line tours?

  • For the Vatican we used Context Tours and did a very in-depth private tour, it was well worth the money and the tour was amazing.  Francesca was our guide.  We booked months in advance, Context Tour was the most expensive thing we did while in Rome, and it was worth it.

For the Colliseum we just walked over from our hotel and there were a bunch of student guides wandering around the grounds advertising tours.  One guy was really nice, and one guy was a jerk, so we just went with the nice guy and joined a tour group that had just started.  It was only like $5 more than just paying admission, and we were in a tour with about 15-20 other people, and the tour guide spoke English (even though he was a little rauncy!  there were some teen girls in our group and he made a few risque jokes!).

  • We didn't take a guided tour of either place, but I did purchase the tickets ahead of time which allowed us to skip the main entrance lines. I purchased the tickets for the Colosseum here: http://www.ticketclic.it/ and the tickets for the Vatican here: http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/MV_Home.html

This.  You don't have to do a tour to skip the line.  Just purchase your tickets online before you go.  Conversely, if you still want to buy your Colosseo tickets when you get there, you could purchase the ticket at the Palatine Hill (less crowded - fewer people want to see it, so the line is shorter).  No matter where you purchase that ticket, it still covers the Forum, Palatine Hill and the Colosseo.  But DEFINITELY purchase your Vatican tickets online beforehand.  We did that and are so glad that we did.  Looking at the line as it wrapped around the building told me we definitely made the right choice there :)

  • We aren't plan ahead kinds, so we didn't book way head of time like the others.  We did a Context Tours tour of the Vatican too, although we booked it *maybe* two days ahead of time.  For the Vatican I recommend taking a tour either way.  It would be too easy to miss things if you were to try to walk through on your own.

We bought the Roma Pass, which allowed us to get into Coliseum without waiting in line.

  • Ditto on the Roma Pass and download Rick Steve's free podcasts on your iPad.
  • I did the Roma pass for the colosseum which allowed me to skip the line. I did a walking tour for the Vatican but there were no real lines that required it.
