WWH&F Do? Half Marathon Question

So I signed up for the Little Rock Half Marathon in two weeks.  The problem is my training isn't where it needed to be, and I am considering backing out.  I've done two half marathons previously, my last one was in April.  My longest long run was an 8 miler about a month ago. I've only been running about 1-2 times week since then.  I feel confident that I could finish it, and maybe do some run/walking if necessary.  I just hating setting myself up feeling like it's going to be awful.  So what would H&F do?

Re: WWH&F Do? Half Marathon Question

  • If it were me, I would still run it.

I'm sort of in a similar situation.  I was registered for the RnR DC full, but just wasn't getting the adequate amount of training in, so I dropped down to the half instead.  I still haven't been great with my training, longest run was 9 miles 3 weekends ago, but I have every intention of still running it.  I have a little more time than you, mine is on St. Patty's Day, so I'm just going to suck it up and try to get all of my remaining runs in for the weeks that I have left.

My time might not be what I originally was hoping for, but since I race for fun, it's about the experience anyway.  I personally wouldn't be happy with myself if I bagged it all together, I want to at least try, I may surprise myself.  Not to mention losing out on my entry fee, I'm cheap so that would really bother me!

I've been here before and still did my half marathon. The only goal was to just finish since the training wasn't there to really get a PR. I'm glad I did it! My time was horrendous, but I still did it and had fun!

    I say go for it!

  • If you want to do it, do it. Just treat it as more of a training run, and make sure you do the run/walk if needed.  Maybe use this as a good jump start to your training for another 1/2 where you can aim to train more and go for a PR?

  • I wouldn't do it.  not if my longest run happen a month ago and I had no base to speak of.
  • I did my entire half training running just 2 days a week with no other workouts. It's not ideal, but I think I was able to make it work b/c I'm not new to running, so I think that's not as detrimental as the lack of long runs. I would be torn between going b/c I was cheap and bailing b/c I would hate to have a crappy time doing it.  II think going would be worth it if it would give you the motivation to kick ass at your next race.

  • This happened to me with the RnR Philly half last fall.  I did a run/walk, running 3 miles, walking 1, etc, running the last 1.1.  Even when I felt good after the 3 miles, I still made sure to walk 1.  I still finished in under 2:30 and felt great after.  Just have fun, don't push yourself too hard and you'll do fine.  Just enjoy the race!
