Birthday party question

I keep going back and forth on the idea of opening gifts at Katie's 1st birthday party.(Which is almost 2 weeks away- crazy!) I don't want anyone to be offended that their gift wasn't opened infront of them, but I also don't want to "bore" anyone either. We'll have around 100 guests, which is why I've been on the fence about it.

I want to get some opinions on what you ladies think.

Re: Birthday party question

  • I don't really have an opinion on it b/c some people enjoy watching others open their gifts and some people would be bored with it so you can't please everyone.  I just had to say HOLY MOLY about the 100 guests!  Miss Katie has lots of adoring fans!

  • I've found at various events, like bday parties, wedding/baby showers, etc. that the people who want to watch the gifts be opened will sit and watch, and those that will be bored by it, find somewhere else to sit and chat with other people. You could also open half of the gifts, break for cake or something like that, and then open the other half.

LOL. My husband and I both have big families and we wanted to invite all of our friends as well. It's definitely more for us- to spend time and hang out with everyone. I know she won't remember it, but I think she'll enjoy looking at the pictures once she's older. It's nothing fancy- we rented a hall and we're having it catered. I'll be sure to post pics after!

  • We opened gifts at Eli's party. there were about 50 people there. Some people sat and watched him open the gifts the whole time while others just mingled in the back and visited with the other friends and family. Also, remember that it isn't 100 gifts, thank goodness! I like the idea of breaking for cake too. just don't expect everyone to sit and intently watch her open all those gifts.

  • We opened gifts at Wyatt's and there were about 65 people there. Mostly people just wandered around and mingled while we opened them, and they would watch for when we opened their gifts and we would thank them. I figure that as long as people have food and conversation they're happy. By that point all of the kids had been sent down to the basement (the volume went down by God knows how many decibels haha) and they were happy.

I guess it depends on where you are and if you have time constraints. We were at home and it didn't matter.

  • We had about 15 per party (2 parties) in VT and we opened gifts. A was pretty overwhelmed and only opened about 2 gifts and then he would sit back and play with the toys/clothes.

  • I had this same predicament at my baby shower.  I personally don't really care to watch people open my gift.  I also hate being the centre of attention so it makes me really uncomfortable to open gifts in front of everyone.  I did it anyways and found a lot of people just visited and snacked while I did.

I honesty think that with over 100 people opening that many gifts, I'd just do it later.  Just make sure you then send a very detailed specific thank-you card to each person.
