Career Change - tell me I'm crazy...or not

To start out, I loathe my job.  It is simply mind numbing.  But, the pay isn't bad and I have great benefits.  The company is currently undergoing some hard times and has been doing some lay-offs, pay cuts, etc.  So, I've been proactivly job searching with no luck.  My biggest problem is that every job sounds equally as boring as the next.  And, considering the decent pay and benefits I'm currently receiving, I don't really want to change jobs.

Now, onto my bright idea.  I'm concidering going to cosmetology school.  I love hair and makeup and anything related to the two.  But, don't most girls?  I also really want to own my own business at some point and owning a salon would be an option.  I also like the idea of having my own schedule and being in control of my income.  I spoke with my own cosmetologist and she thinks I'd be great at it.  We're close friends so I don't think she's just blowing smoke up my a$$.

So, first off, do you ladies think it's a crazy/stupid idea?

From the research I've done I can either go to night school for 1.5 years and keep my day job.  Or, I could quit my day job (work part time at night/weekends) and go to school during the day finishing in 9 months to a year.  Financially we could swing me not working full time, but it would be a bit of a lifestyle change.  What do you think?

  • Life is too short to be miserable in your job. So if you think you could see yourself doing this and being happy, then I say go for it! As far as day vs. evening classes, I think that is a choice you and your H will have to make.

  • If you can make the numbers work, I say go for it! I am of the opinion you'll be much more successful in life and business if you're doing something you're passionate about instead of just having a J-O-B.
  • Do it lady, why not?
  • One thing to think about would be the benefit/insurance aspect.  A good friend of mine is a hairdresser (she owned her own shop until her second baby was born, then she became an instructor at the barber college and does her own clients in the evenings), and I know she pays OOP for insurance.

Other than that, it sounds like it's something you really want to do so I say if you've got the support from your H then go for it!

  • I say go for it! If it were me, I'd want it done as soon as possible. Sit down with your H and map out what would have to change and whatnot, and if you can swing it in 9 months, I say do it!

  • You know, I did a total career change myself about 4 years ago (went back to school and the whole nine), and I'm just getting my feet wet now within my new field. It's a field that will never make near the money I would have made in my old field, but I sure am a lot happier.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  • I think it'd be great for you to have a job you love. Most of us spend the majority of our waking time at work, so might as well enjoy it, or at least not hate it.

What about the financial aspects through after you finish school? How's the job market for cosmetologists? How long will it take to build up a dedicated clientele so you earn a steady income?  Could you take some business classes along with the beauty classes to help you prepare for owning your own business in the future?

  • I made a career change at the ripe age old age of 24, after only working three years in the field I for which I went to college. It was the best decision, and I'm so happy I took that risk, even though it meant some lean months financially for us. I agree that life is too short to be unhappy with your career!

Do look at it from the retirement/health insurance/other benefits standpoint. Sounds like you're the type to do your research, so you've probably thought about that plenty already. Good luck!!
