Mary/Seamstresses

Ladies  - what is a good entry-level sewing machine? I am thinking of taking a class and learning to do simple things...

Re: Mary/Seamstresses

  • I got this one for Christmas and I love it. It's VERY easy to use and has pretty much all the feet I will need for a while. It might be more than you want to spend on your first machine, though. This is my second and was a huge upgrade from my very very very old Kenmore.

  • I'm kind of interested in this too. I want to make curtains, though in all honestly I can't see doing much else, so  I don't know if it would even be economical to buy even a very basic machine.
  • I have a Singer that I got from Walmart in the $200 price range and it's worked great so far for hemming pants, shirts, and curtains.  I'm curious to see how it does with heavier curtain fabrics, but so far it's been okay with hemming jeans and sheer curtain fabrics.  I can look up the model number when I get home, but I think it's a 7463.  I'd stick to a basic Singer or Brother model as you really can't go wrong with either.

This one is often recommended on the craft board for beginners and intermediate sewers. It gets good reviews. I use a Singer from Joanns, about $150 and it has worked just fine, though Singers don't have the best rep anymore. I bought a new Janome on Black Friday but have yet to open it. I wanted to upgrade, but also hate change....someday I'll use it, haha.

  • I bought my first machine, a Brother, at walmart in college (so it's probably about 15 years old) and it still works great.  I upgraded to an entry-level industrial straight stitch Babylock (which is made by Brother) about a year ago so that I could do more quilting and sew through pretty much any fabric, but I still use my old machine for decorative stitches.  I have a friend from college, also a quilter, who has a fancy janome and she loves it.
