DC area runners - what does your race calendar look like?
I am moving to the DC area by early April. Woo! I wasn't excited about it until I moved into my apartment last week.
What races are fun, worthwhile, and well-organized? Anything from a 5K to a marathon, probably more in the 10K-half marathon range. I already have the Shamrock Marathon in March and Marine Corps Marathon
in October on tap for this year. Not sure about my spring schedule yet,
though. It depends on how I do at Shamrock and how long it takes for me to find a job.

Re: DC area runners - what does your race calendar look like?
Well I'm not necessarily in the DC area, I'm a little north of there in PA, but this spring I'm doing the Irongirl Half in Columbia, MD on April 29th and the Frederick Half on May 6th.
If you like trail runs, there's one in Harpers Ferry, WV on May 12th that I was going to do, but it turns out I'll be out of town that weekend, which sucks, because I love trail runs and there don't seem to be that many offered. I can't think of the name off the top of my head but I'll post it if I can find it. I think you can choose between the 4 mile run or a half, but I'm not 100% sure.
welcome to DC!
I've found the pacers race to be extremely well executed and organized. my favorite among their events is the parkway classic 10 mi (Apr 22 this year). it's a point to point that starts at Mt Vernon and ends in Alexandria. despite the logistical challenges of getting a bunch of runners to Mt Vernon, it is an excellent race.
I also ran the parks half marathon (sep in MoCo) last year for the first time and though it was crazy humid and I didn't have a great run I thought the organization was excellent and the post race party was awesome.
also have to give a shout out to the Capitol Hill Classic 10K. but I'm biased because it's close to my house. it's a fund raiser, so there aren't a lot of frills, but also not a lot of fuss.
capitol running company hosts several events downtown and in west potomac park. people tend to get costumed out for those, but the course is exactly the same all the time and I'm kind of bored of them: St Pat's 8K, Jingle all the way 8K, Veteran's Day 10K
here's my tentative plan for the year. I'm still trying to find some more 10Ks:
April: Cherry Blossom 10M, Parkway Classic 10M
May: Capitol Hill Classic 10K
June: Lawyer's Have Heart 10K (pacers event. sno cones after)
July: Twilight 5K (pacers event, HOT)
Aug: Annapolis 10 M (maybe)
Sep: Parks Half
Oct: Wilson Half (pacers), Army 10M, MCM 10K,
Nov: SOME Turkey trot 5K
Found it! It's called the Two Rivers Heritage Half Marathon on May 12th.
There is also the Freedoms Run in October. There's a full, half, 10k and 5k. I ran the half last year and it was a tough course, but very beautiful. The full runs you through 4 national parks in the area.
ETA: Oh, and if you want the Baltimore area as well, one of my fave races is the Celtic Solstice 5 Miler. Its right before Christmas every year.

Nope. They canned that one. There IS one called the Tough Mudder Mid-Atlantic, which is Sept 8-9 in Frederick. I'm signed up in case you want to join a team
The only thing on my calendar is Cherry Blossom (April 1st).
I don't do a lot of the larger races just because they are pricey and the logistics can be difficult. That being said Pacers has a Friday night series every night in April that is pretty nice.
Potomac Valley Track Club also does a series of 5K/10Ks that are pretty nice. They are smaller races, but are usually well organized as well.

If you are looking for a half there is the Marine Corps half in Fredricksburg - the course is pretty tough. There is also a half in Alexandria over Memorial Day weekend. The course kinda sucked cause it has three loops and last year they didn't have a way to monitor if you actually did the loops. Not sure if they fixed it this year or not.

Runwashington.com is a good place to look for race info.
ooh, good to know, i was considering doing this w/ a couple friends of mine but then they bailed so i hadn't looked into it any further.
i'm going to indy for a half marathon the week before though so that won't work!
LIES woman! I'm running the VA Beach RnR half SIX DAYS before the TM! You can do it!
All I've got planned is a Metric Marathon on the Eastern Shore in April, and the Frederick Half (a favorite of mine) in May. I am signed up for NYCM in November, so I'll probably add some Fall races to keep me motivated.
I find Montgomery County Road Runner, Annapolis Strider, and Howard County Strider races to all be exceptionally well run and cheap. Some of the low key races are in the 5-10$ range, and you still get food post race.
2012 Goal: working towards pre-pregnancy speed!
04/15 KI Metric Marathon/16.3 m (2:05:55, 7:43 pace)
05/06 Frederick 13.1 (1:41:09)
11/04 NYCM
yeah but you're superwoman, cinco!!! actually, it is not the racing part, it the traveling part. i live in RI so i would be away two weekends in a row if i went to VA too but the other excuse is that school starts that week (and i will have 2 going this year - one in preschool 2 days, so her first school experience, and the other starts full day kindergarten!) so it is a huge adjustment period for us.
how's 3 kiddos working out for you? i see you're right back at it so it must be going pretty well! i found that normalcy resumed much sooner after the 3rd - you would have never caught me out running 5 weeks PP after #1 or #2, but after #3, racing at 7 weeks PP seemed like a great idea!!!
yeah, if you'll be in MoCo many of the races I listed would be kind of a hike for you. I'm more central and do most of my racing in DC/NOVA.
but now I'm thinking about doing the Frederick half based on pp's. maybe I can get cinco's autograph while I'm there!

Moshi's is the hard core one. No back to back racing for this lady. There would be too much bribing to get someone to watch my nutty kids
I have really enjoyed going from 2 to 3 kids. It hasn't been that hard of a transition because we were already used to crazy with 2. 3 is just a tad louder. The running is going well, weight loss...um, not so much. Too bad that doesn't get easier with each baby!

Oops!!! Ya know, I was wondering how you would pull that off w/ all those kids :P
And you're right - 3 kids IS loud...and constant! I love my kids, but I really love their bedtime! And I'm several months ahead of you and still struggling with the infamous last 10 pounds and my stomach looks like a war zone - it is probably not going to see the light of day anytime soon!
