Do you think this is too young?

Marc Jacobs used a few girl models who were FOURTEEN years old. They are walking in fashion shows for him.

Do you think it's too young? There's tons of controversy over it because they are still children and the pressures of high fashion, etc. Not to mention the eating disorders and such that go on.

Re: Do you think this is too young?

  • I don't really think it's a big deal. I mean, I think the parents should be involved and monitor the situation but if a girl wants to be a model then she has to get started young.

  • As someone with an almost 14 year old girl in my house, I don't really see the problem either.

Now if it was like Victoria's Secret, than yes, that would be wrong, but if they're fully clothed I think it's fine.  As long as the parents are there to make sure they're not being exploited or anything, I think it's okay.  They use young models in ads for Kohls and other stores all the time, I don't see any difference.

  • If their parents are involved, I don't see a problem with it.

However, if parents are allowing their teenage daughters to wear revealing clothes (meaning more revealing than a bikini) in public venues like on the runway or in a print/online magazine, then I think the spotlight needs to be turned to the parents who approved of it, not the modeling agency.

  • I am unsure how to feel, on one had it is young to be working, especially if these teens are not in school and doing it full time (not just on the side/weekends), especially considering all the attention made over child workers in other countries.

Then again, multi million dollar models like Kate Moss were already known in the industry by that age, so....   I guess it just depends on the child and family support system.   Could be a good thing, but it could be a bad thing.   I wouldn't want it for my child, but I wouldn't stop them or push them either way, if it is something they wanted to look into, they would have to focus on school FIRST and modeling second.

  • It makes me kind of sad, actually. It's like kids these days are forgetting to be KIDS. These girls have so much of their lives ahead of them to be adults with jobs and modeling and all that pressure. I just want kids these days to enjoy that time, because it leaves so fast and once it's gone, it's gone. Reality and adulthood will smack you hard enough right after high school.

  • No big deal. It's not uncommon or new.

  • So do you think it was too young for the kids of Harry Potter to be acting? Or any other child actor?  Because I don't really see a difference.  As long as their parents are involved, and they are keeping on track with school (ie, graduate HS by 18), then I don't see that big of a problem with it.

Well, yes, I do think it's too young. I'm not really against it, but it does make me sad. It's a sacrifice of your youth, before you really understand what it's all about. How many child celebrities have we seen grow in to adults, but have issues with losing their childhood?

  • Many famous models began around 14 years old.

Do I necessarily agree with it? Not really.

This. And what Otter said about young models losing their childhood.
