Dishwashing detergent

What do you use?

With detergents going phosphate free, my glasses are super, super cloudy.  I currently use Cascade. It's not working and it's making a film on the inside of the dishwasher. It's stainless steel, not plastic so it's really hard to get that stuff off. I tried the vinegar wash. That didn't work.

Is there something better?

Re: Dishwashing detergent

  • Our glasses are getting really cloudy too, and I didn't know what the culprit was. Annoying b/c it makes me feel like we are giving dirty glasses to guests, even as they come right out of the washer.  i just figured the easiest solution was to buy new glasses at costco, since they are only $9.99 for a pack of 12. Embarrassed  I'm wondering though if this is going to be a reoccuring problem if there is some sort of material that wouldn't show the cloudiness as badly as clear glass does.

  • the only kind that has worked for us (although i've only tried a few different brands) is Seventh Generation.
  • Finish tabs with powerball.  Not the gel packs, the hard ones.  I get them at Target on sale with coupons fairly often.  They're great for small helpers too, as William can unwrap them and put them in, without overdosing the dishwasher.  We tried the cascade packs, and had film, and tried liquids and powders, and everything left film.  But the Finish tabs are awesome.  :)

  • OK I'm totally going to try the finish tabs.

Yes! All-His I feel weird giving guests our glasses too. We do have a cobalt blue glass set that was a gift and they don't show the cloudiness as much.

  • We have the same problem and the inside of our dishwasher is a mess (also stainless steel).   We have used the Finish dishwasher cleaner and that has worked the best for us.   I haven't noticed it on our glasses as much as on our silverware.
  • Another vote for Finish. We use the gelpacs and they have worked better than anything else we've ever tried. We tried the powerball tabs as well, but becasue of their shape compared to the detergent compartment, they kept getting stuck instead of dispersing, but I imagine they would work just as well for us if they could only get out.
  • HA- since we just got our 'new to us' dishwasher yesterday, I'm going to vote for Finish too. It's what my mom always uses.

Also- Don't EVER use the gel packs, they'll mess up your dishwasher. That's what a repair man told my mom when those packs first came out. They dont' always dissolve, so you're left w/ that little gel wrapper in your dishwasher.

AND Another tip, my parents just got a stainless steal one too. The guy told my mom that you need to run your hot water before running your dishwasher, or else you'll be washing your dishes in cold water. That might help too.

  • We had to have our diswasher serviced last year and the repairman warned me about the lesser phosphates in the dishwashing soap.  He said to help - run a cycle once a month with Dishwasher Magic (I think it's like $2.99 at Target) as it helps to clear the philm/clogged areas within your dishwasher.  I'm sure some vinegar concoction on Pinterest would work as well :)  I do notice a difference after we run it.

We just had ours serviced under our warranty, and the dude said the same things!
