We leave for Kona on Friday with our 20 month old, any suggestions on what to do? We're staying at the Wyndham Royal Sea Cliff.
Re: Kona with a toddler
We were there for the Ironman in October -- DD1 was almost 4, and DD2 was 18 months. We spent one day driving the northern half of the island -- we stopped at the Waipi'o Lookout, Laupahoehoe Point Park, World Botanical Gardens (which left us unimpressed, although our girls did have fun in the maze), and Akaka Falls.
We spent another day at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but with young kids you should be aware of the risk of exposing them to fumes; we tried to limit our time outside the Halema'uma'u Crater, but on the ride home DD1 was complaining about the smell apparently still lingering in her nose. The girls did like the Jaggar Museum, especially the machine that measured the seismic activity of their jumps (although DD2 didn't get it and just had fun jumping), as well as the book shop that had a little table they thought was just for them. The Thurston Lava Tube was pretty impressive, too, although I'm not sure how much DD2 got out of it aside from enjoying the hike from her Ergo. On the way home, we stopped at the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, which was pretty cool, especially since the girls got to see their first sea turtles up close there.
We spent two days at beaches. One was La'aloa Bay Beach which was walking distance from our house; it was already pretty rough in October so we were limited to one small semi-protected cove on the side. The other was a drive to Anaeho'omalu Bay Beach Park. (I had planned to go to Hapuna Beach but everyone else in the car decided they were done driving once we reached Anaeho'omalu Bay. lol.) That ended up being great for the girls, with calm, shallow water and lots of shade, and we got to see more sea turtles there too. The beach by the King K hotel would have been good too except it was right at the center of all the Ironman action while we were there.
Enjoy your trip!
