I know there's serveral ladies on here who have been to Kauai. I've got a question for you. Did you invest in hiking boots for your trip. We're planning on hiking a few miles of the Kalalau Trail and some of the canyon. We're trying to decide if we can just get away with our trail running shoes. I've done some fairly big hikes in them but it's hard to gauge how hard these ones will be...

Re: Hking Kauai
DH and I both invested in hiking shoes years back since most of our trips include hiking of various degrees. I honestly don't know how people hike without them but I've also never done it. We hiked on Kauai and Maui (though not the Kalalau Trail) and it was pretty rocky.
Check out endless.com. You can find some hiking shoes for under $100.
Enjoy Kauai! It's one of my favorite places on earth!

I did the Hanakapiai Trail (first 2 miles of the Kalalau) in an old crappy pair of Sketchers (I actually included a picture of what they looked like at the end of my blog post about the trail). Just wear something comfy that you're not afraid to trash -- good tread is a plus, but there's only so much you do about slippery mud on rocks.
I just wore Keens when we hiked at the canyon (you can see a picture of that trail in this post) and I was fine.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Ditto - I really like Keens. Bought them before we went to Kauai and I've gotten a good amount of use out of them while traveling. They were great for Costa Rica in particular, where we were in and out of water, mud, etc. You probably don't *need* them for Kauai, but if you do a fair amount of traveling, I think they're really nice to have.

I don't have hiking boots but Dh does. We NEVER bring them to Kauai. We normally retire our running shoes while they still have good tread on them then take them to Hawaii with us. Sometimes they get trashed, sometimes not. It depends on how muddy it is. Either way, they've always been just fine.
For the first 2 mi. of the Kalalau Trail, you can get away with just your running shoes with good tread. There are tons of sticks you can use as hiking sticks at the entrance so pick up one of those.
For Waimea Canyon, there are tons of hikes. I've always wanted to do the Pihea Trail but somehow it's just never worked out for us. It looks like a great hike and doesn't require hiking boots, either.
This is what I was thinking of doing so I'm glad to hear it will work. I've got so many pairs that are still usable and well broken in but I can't run in anymore. I definitely won't be worried about trashing them.
DH has Keens and I've got Chacos that are our choice walking sandals. We'll make sure to bring those too.

We did the first 4 miles of that trail to the waterfall, it was a great hike! DH does wear hiking boots, I wore sneakers (and never ever hike either) and I did fine!
I have pictures fom the hike in my blog link below, have a great trip!
I hike a lot (used to live in Colorado, now in Hawaii), and I tend to twist my ankle too often, so I always have owned good hiking boots. That said, I've hiked a lot of Hawaii trails in chacos, running shoes, real boots, and my low trail runners (these are my favorite, and I wear them when I'm not hiking, too). Both pairs of my hiking boots/shoes are gore-tex so crossing streams is no problem.
The biggest issue here in Hawaii is that trails can be really slick; the mud is very different (and will stain everything red) than what I've experienced elsewhere. A cheap pair of of trekking poles might be a better investment than good hiking boots. I've found them on amazon for about $25. In fact, I just ordered another pair today after we experienced a challenging slick trail in Kauai last weekend.
