Putting my $ Where my Mouth Is (bike fitting)

Those of ya'll that have been around a while may remember my neck and shoulder problems from back in the fall. I was in PT for a while, stopped b/c it got better, and have been back in PT for about 6 weeks because the pain came back. My physical therapist and I have finally decided that it all stems from a work injury that I had over 10 years ago where I tore most of the muscles in my lower back. She's been working on that with massage, other PT kind of stuff, and finally started needling back last week. It's better and stable, but I'm still not pain free. We've tried to think of other things that could help. Bike fit came up since I spend a lot of time on my road bike hunched over. We've also made some ergonomic changes to my desk at the office and in my home office. My last bike fitting was about 5 years ago.

Tomorrow I am going to get fitted by a very reputable local bike fitter. He's only going to do my road bike for now and may glance at my mountain bike. (It is over $200 to be fit PER bike, so I have to think of my checking account, too.)  I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Re: Putting my $ Where my Mouth Is (bike fitting)

  • One of my coaches said a bike fit is good to have once a year. I don't know about that (overkill?), perhaps it's a way for the bike shop to make more money.

Most people I know get them when they:

    -Get a new bike

-Are having physical problems such as back pain, neck pain, knee pain

-Will be getting a new bike

-Are taking up a different kind of riding like maybe putting aerobars on their road bike

I think once a year is overkill if you are not having problems and haven't changed anything with your bike.

All of my road and cyclocross bikes are very similar in the way they are set up, so I can make the changes myself to the other 3 bikes. My mountain bikes are quite different.

  • Good for you!  I hope it helps.  I also think people should be re-fitted when they've had an injury or the like.

I'm getting a fitting done tomorrow for my new tri bike.  I'll have to also get re-fitted for my road bike since it will no longer double as a tri bike!
