Paleo Question: Baked Goods
Hi All,
I'm new to Paleo and really like the principles of it. However, I'm wondering about the baked goods that are considered Paleo. While I realize they use almond flour, I still wonder how much of these should really be consumed. Obviously I'm not going to eat four scones for breakfast, but they just feel "wrong" I can't really put my finger on it. So Paleo eaters, what has been your experience with these type of recipes and do you recommend them?
Re: Paleo Question: Baked Goods
I don't make any of this kind of stuff for 2 major reasons: 1) I'm lazy and 2) I have a major sweet tooth, so I'd eat a whole batch of whatever it was. I also just think the idea of making a Paleo version of something is odd. If I am craving a cupcake, I'm just going to have a real cupcake and move on.
You can eat this stuff, but I would only do it in moderation, as they usually contain quite a bit of sugar (although in paleo approved form) and carbs. It's sorta like a Lara Bar - they are delicious and technically paleo, but you really shouldn't eat them every day b/c they're like a Paleo candybar (and one would hope you wouldn't eat a candy bar everyday).
Ditto the PP. For a special occasion I will eat a "real" piece of cake, cupcake or whatever.
I very very rarely make paleo sweets/baked goods. I have made the Everyday Paleo apple muffins once (DH didn't like them), paleo cupcakes and paleo brownies from the Paleo Project blog once each, and we're going on 9 months of paleo eating.
I do eat about 4 Larabars/week though... (some homemade, some packaged)
Thanks everyone! This is very helpful. The treat aspect was what I was trying to get my head around. I'd really rather not count calories (I'm not doing this exclusively for weight loss), but I was like there is no way you could integrate these products on the regular. I'm going to try and do it without them and see how it goes.
I make them rarely and then it's usually for ds (although I always try them). I've found that they stall my weight loss and the amounts of sugar/carbs in most of them spike my insulin enough to lead to crashes/cravings later. I made a batch of pancakes this weekend. I ate two, ds ate three and we froze the rest so I can pull them out for him once a week or so (because apparently a 4 year old can only stand bacon and eggs for breakfast so many days in a row before you have to throw him a paleo pancake bone).
The only time I make this kind of thing is in place of a normal gluten-filled item like my kid's birthday cake. I make a point to not make it a regular thing and I either use coconut flour or just a basic GF flour mix.
I highly discourage anyone from using almond flour because it's a caloric omega-6 bomb that once cooked is also oxidized. Just stay away from that stuff!
It really irks me how many "paleo" cookbooks use it all the time without considering the problems with it.
It's one thing to eat a handful of raw almonds as a snack, it's a totally other thing to grind enough almonds for 1-2 cups of flour than cook them to death either by baking or frying.

I went paleo for a short period of time and I never even heard of paleo cupcakes and cakes until this year. (went paleo in 2009)
Would I recommend it? If you have the time. If not, I wouldn't bother.
Yea it just seems like a lot of hype to me so that people will do the diet/buy the cookbooks. I was just wondering if this was the norm for paleo or not. I think I'll proceed without baked goods and only make them as an occasional treat for really special occasions like the holidays.
