If you've cruised with kids?
Did you have a suite? I've only cruised once prekids and the rooms were definitely small. With kids did you feel like you were on top of one another? What did you do while they were sleeping? If it matters I'm considering a Disney cruise.
Thanks.
Re: If you've cruised with kids?
How old are they and how many?
FWIW, from what I've read the Disney rooms are a bit bigger than standard cruise ship rooms.
We went with DS when he was 11.5months, we had an ocean view on Carnival. It was cramped but not awful. We were on a budget so I didn't mind saving the $ and not having a balcony. Of course a balcony would have been nice but we had an awesome time without it.
At that age we were lucky because he slept in his stroller a lot for naps and we just went to bed early at night. We going on a Disney Cruise this September. I opted for a balcony this time that way if someone is stuck with the baby in the room we can still enjoy the balcony. I'm sure I'll never be able to afford a suite, especially on Disney. I don't even think a balcony is make or break, it really depends on what you can afford. I would still go if I couldn't afford a balcony. You don't normally spend much time in the room.

A friend of mine just went and when I asked her she gave me this: A little long but explains alot HIH
. So here it goes - it was a great vacation, but much more stressful with a toddler! He is 22 mos old and did not want to be trapped in a stroller, and he isn't really the type to sit on your lap and watch an hour long ice show! The cruise we went on was dreamworks themed, so they did offer a lot of things for kids, so that was good. They also offered a nursery for babies 6-36 months old, it was $8/hr. We tried it, and the first time we left him, he did great. The second time we tried to leave him he started crying as soon as we turned the corner to go in. So that was the end of that. He is not really used to a daycare situation though, but all of the staff were really great in there! We also had my parents and sister with us, so they helped a lot and would watch him so we could go to the casino or see a late comedy show, etc. The dinner was also long for him to sit through, although our watiers were really good and would always have a fruit cup waiting for him and get him his dinner first. As far as the ports - we stopped in Belize and Cozumel. Belize was a terrible stop. Nothing to do with a toddler, so we took the tender in, had a few beers and then went back to the ship. My sister had a great time there though they did a jungle tour and ziplined. Cozumel was nice - we went to a beach / snorkel area, they also had a sea lion show and dolphin show. We took a 5 minute taxi ride to the beach, and I just put him on my lap, there are no seat belts for a car seat, I was really nervous about it, but didn't really have a choice. They did have a splash area for babies, but he is not potty trained yet, so even though he was in a swimmy diaper, they told us not to bring him in that area, which sucked. They did have a tiny splash area where he was allowed, but got bored of that after a while! He couldn't use the pools either - I totally understand why, but it still sucked. AND they did have people watching the pool area very close, and we saw several people get escorted out with little ones. If I had to do it over again, I would probably wait until he was a little older. BUT that is just my opinion. There was a lot of people on the ship with kids - all ages, and they appeared to be just fine. My nephews are 9 and 10 and they had a blast. They set up a pack and play in our room for him to sleep in, but to me it looked kind of cruddy, so we opted to have him sleep with us in the bed - it was a king size so we still had plenty of room. At home he never sleeps with us, but I didn't really want to use the pack n play. Are you planning a cruise? All of the staff on the ship loved him, and treated him great. By the end of the cruise he was saying hello to everyone in the elevators and repeating all the deck's names. Hope this helps, sorry it was so long. Let me know if you have any other questions! Lisa
We cruised on the Disney Magic last April and LOVED it. DS was 4 and DD was 22 mos. We had a balcony room and it was pretty comfortable compared to other cruises we have taken (before kids). We had plenty of storage. At night, it was kind of tight because the pack and play took up most of the open area and the couch was converted into a bed for DS. However, it was not bad. I really, really liked the fact that Disney has tubs in the staterooms. The bathroom was actually split in two smaller rooms. One with a toilet and sink, and the other with the tub and another sink. I think that helped us not feel on top of each other while getting ready.
We did not use the balcony as much as I expected but it was really nice and I recommend it. We all went to bed early everyday after the shows ended. It was nice to wake up early, beat the crowds and have a relatively peaceful breakfast.
Are you guys gonna want to stay up and watch TV when the kids are sleeping? If yes, you might be better off getting two rooms. Since Disney doesn't really give much of a discount for the 3rd and 4th passenger (like some other cruise lines do) two connecting inside staterooms would likely be cheaper then a family suite.
We never hung out in our room on our last Disney cruise (it was only 3 nights though). We only have one small kid also. She was in the kids area or the pool the whole time.
I have had balcony, oceanview and deluxe inside room on Disney boat but really could care less about the room so we always book whichever is cheapest.
