How do you handle stress?

I am under a mountain of stress right now. Most of it is good or neutral but I have an absurd amount to accomplish. So, how do you handle your stress? I find myself shutting down or eating. A lot.

Re: How do you handle stress?

  • If I'm really stressed, I tend to cry, get a headache from crying, then I take a nap lol.

I've found that running really helps relieve my stress.

ETA: Now I feel guilty for not mentioning this one first. For me, the one thing that completely takes away my stress is praying. To let go of all my worries and remember that God is in control.

  • I got to a point a few years ago where the stress/anxiety was so overwhelming and I could not function very well, so I got a prescription for Pristiq and that has helped a lot. It allows me to still "feel" but I'm able to cope better, if that makes sense.

I also try to exercise or do yoga, which helps as well. And I love to read, drink tea and listen to calming music, or take a long bath. If all else fails, I like wine. Smile

    Good luck!

  • Wine.

    Friends.

    Violent video games.

    Crying.

    Eating.

I'm not saying that at least 3 out of 5 of those are not unhealthy. However, it works for me. I also remind myself constantly that this too, shall pass.

Oh, honey, yes. Grand Theft Auto was my video game jam back in the day. I loved me some hooker beat-downs for money. Fo' shizz.

Now, I settle for Mario and Donkey Kong. I still listen to angry music sometimes when I'm having a bad day, or hardcore rap. Calm music does not calm me down.

Oh, I love me some hard core music when I am feeling the stress.  That Limp Bizkit song "Give me something to break" is one of my all time favs.

  • I used to go out with friends to a club and dance my @ss off while downing Vegas bombs. That was seriously my cure-all for a crappy week.

When I couldn't get away though, I'd usually either cry, eat or listen to loud rap music. Going for a long walk would help, too.

  • I eat. I'm not good with stress. If it's really stressful, I just shut down entirely.
  • I complain. I just become a big whiny baby.

  • Exercise. Working out on a regular basis has really helped to manage my stress levels. Nothing like lifting heavy stuff and putting it back down to get rid of aggression! Taking a long walk where my body gets in a rhythm so I can let my mind wander helps too.

Loud angry music. I've been resorting to this a lot at work lately, with headphones of course so as not to annoy my coworkers. Tongue Tied

When those liens of defense fail, crying.

  • --Lots of days, I leash up the dog as soon as I get home and we go on a long walk. That has been a huge stress reliever for me, what with getting outside and burning up some energy before I tackle evening chores.

--I cry, and call my mom.

    --I journal and pray.

--A glass of wine while I cook dinner. Maybe another with dinner.

--In the past, I have had to take medications when stress levels started impacting my mental health past a certain point. They definitely have their place.

--Just doing little things for me: pedicure, massage, buying new lipstick, etc.

--I make lists. Helps me compartmentalize and "put away" the stress.

(Some of the above does not currently apply, as I am quite pregnant.)
