Haven't had a period since before Christmas...possible causes?

Let me preface with I know I'm not pregnant, we haven't had sex in over 6 months (a whole other story entirely, but not for this post) and I will be seeing a gyno in a couple of days. Of course when I ask the doc about possibilities, she won't make any guesses without seeing me and I totally understand that so I'm just looking for opinions to kill time till I actually see her.

I'm going with peri-menopause (I'm going to be 45 in May).

  • Stress or weight loss can be causes

  • Were you regular before that?  Some people just have long cycles.  I skipped a year once myself.

  • Have you started any intense workout routines recently? That can be the attributing factor. Have you changed your diet?
  • Ditto PP... rapid weight gain, rapid weight loss, stress, thyroid issues, some vitamin/mineral deficiencies, nearing menopause, etc. There are many, many things this could be.  Definitely see what your gyn has to say.

    Bingo.

But don't just accept that without proof.

I entered menopause at 39.  Periods stopped cold and I got full blown menopause symptoms (hot flashes are a b!tch).  I went to my doctor and blood tests revealed that my thyroid was wacky.   We also found that I had a tumor on my pituitary gland, but two prescriptions later, I am still bleeding.

What made me irate was a conversation I had with a neurosurgeon about my tumor.  He asked how we found it and I mentioned that my periods had stopped when I was 39.  He nodded and said that if I had been 40, they would have just chalked it off to menopause and not bothered looking.

I was pissed at the whole medical profession for a while after that meeting.

  • I would also consider getting bloodwork done. I have PCOS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. It cause severe imbalances in your hormone levels...much like menopause. GL
