so I had a crappy race.

And I don't know what happened other than just to say I had a crappy race.

It was a rough course, but there were lots of PRs, so I can't blame that.  I did a fairly normal training cycle and my last half was 8 weeks ago, so even though I missed two weeks due to sickness, that should have resulted in that much endurance loss.  I didn't fuel as usual because the water stations were really wonky, so that could have been part of it, but I started to fall apart really before that should have been a factor.

I ran Garmin-less for most of the race since running through downtown totally made my watch go bonkers, and the first half of the race was right at race pace.

Mile 6 - 10:09

Mile 7 - 10:39

And it all got slower from there.

I was aiming for a sub 2:13 and eeked out a 2:20:10.

I just wish I could pinpoint exactly what happened so I wouldn't repeat the same mistake.

Re: so I had a crappy race.

  • Aww, boo.  That stinks.  I'm sorry.

Best of luck with the next one.

  • Angry That sucks. I'm sorry.

And you're right, it EXTRA sucks when you don't know why. I ran a 10K a couple years ago that I should have done all right in... but I inexplicably crashed in like the 4th mile and was absolutely miserable and almost embarrassed (because I was so -- relatively -- far off my goal).

The nice thing is, there's ALWAYS another race on the horizon. You got one sh!tty one out of your system. Should be a lonnnnnng time until that happens again. Stick out tongue

Exactly this.  I'd rather bonk on a race I trained like crap for than a race where I have no excuse or reason for why I didn't do well.  I'm sorry Kat, you'll get them at the next one!

  • i'm sorry, i know that is incredibly disappointing.

it sucks but the truth is that not every race can be our best race.  all we can do is race our best for the conditions that happen to be present on that day.  like you said, the course was rough and your fueling was off.  you finished, and it wasnt a horrible time at all.  i know it seems horrible now - but give it a week and it wont.

congrats though - you DID finish, even when it was sucking.  that is an athlete.

  • Sorry about your race.  :(  Sucks when you can't figure out what caused it.  I'm sure your next one will be better!
  • Hubs and I had a long talk at dinner and while I want to smack him in the face now, he told me I had to learn a hard lesson.

I hate it when he's right.

    I outran my fitness.

My last half was 9 weeks ago, I PR'd under 100% perfect circumstances and felt like I had absolutely nothing left, which is why I missed a sub 2:15 by 24 seconds, haha.

So it wasn't entirely rational to think that I could knock three minutes off my PR time in only 8 weeks of training under less than perfect circumstances.

What I did learn is that I should be able to run a sub 60 minute 10K, a goal I've been chasing for years.  What I also learned is that right now, I can't run a 1:02 10K, than another 7ish miles at that same pace, haha!

Josh tried as much as possible to get me to see this at the beginning of the training cycle, but I was coming off a PR high and thought I was invincible I guess.  I hate learning lessons the hard way!

The good news is that my next goal race isn't until June and so I now have time do a full 18 week training cycle for a faster time.

Thanks for commiserating along with me Smile

  • Do you think maybe since it was so hilly an extra GU could have helped? Those hills take more energy. I had brought one extra just in case because I would usually only need 2 for a half, but all the hills made me need an extra boost of energy.

  • I'm sorry you had a crappy race, but it sounds like you are already focusing on the next race, which is all you can do.  As someone else said, it sucks, but not every race can be our best, there are bound to be a few sprinkled in there that are going to suck.  You are going to kick asss at your next one, PLUS it sounds like you found out you are capable of a >60 min 10K!

Exactly! Something you learn early on with cycling (applies to running, swimming, and other endurance sports) is that you can only hold your peak fitness for so long. It varies with everyone. For me, it's about 3 weeks. I can completely kill racing for 3 weeks when I'm training to peak. After that, I completely stink for another 2 weeks before I come back around to "average" race fitness. As you know, training is cyclic, a series of highs and lows, stresses and recovery.

  • I wrote an almost identical post at my last half in October. There wasn't any good reason for the suck fest that was that race. I was hoping for a PR, and I really *should* have been able to pull it off. But for whatever reason I didn't....by kind of a lot.

    It sucks. I'm sorry. :(

    There's always next time.

  • I'm sorry Kat :(  Sounds like hydration may have been at play, but sometimes there's no explanation. Don't beat youself up over it.

I've had terrible races under perfect condtions. Conversley, some of my PR's have been at races less-than-ideal conditions. I can't find an explaination for some of those situations either!

Sounds like you've been able to talk it out with the hubs. Let that give you yousome peace of mind and confidence for the next one :)

  • Sorry Sad

I am not a big fan of the course as well. I dont like the "hills" on allen pkwy.

Did you all start late too? Did they have you all start in the opposite direction as the 5kers? I finished in <30 minutes for the 5K but on our way back didnt see any of the halfers on the course. Seems like the separated the courses maybe because ours didnt follow the map of the course they had online.

  • Starry, yes they had us start in the opposite direction and we started late, but not as late as the 5Kers.  The start line was a cluster because they weren't making any announcements and then all the halfers had to squeeze around the start arch so it wouldn't mess with our timing chips.

Other than that, it was more well run than I had expected.  Not great, but not the mess I was envisioning.

Thats good. I figured they did that bc we should have seen you all running against in on Allen parkway. I would have hated running 3 loops of that for a half marathon.

Are you doing the woodlands half coming up? I am...

  • No, my next half is March 17th, the Seabrook Lucky Trails one.  Then I'm trying to decide if I want to Angie's after that or not

I am doing Angies on April 1. Just an FYI, they sent us an emial about a week ago saying they were almost full (<150 spots left) and she said they normally sell out a month early, so that would be next week. The course is flat which is nice (same part of the course as the USA 10 miler)
