Where do you find time?

I went from being a SAHM to working full-time six months ago and am finding my health is really slipping.  I'm getting better at eating healthy again, but need to conquer the exercise part now.  I'm just really having a hard time finding the time to do it.

I work a combination of 2nd and 3rd shift and my schedule varies weekly.  On days I work 3rd, I nap in the morning for about three hours, have my kids in the afternoon, and try to sleep for a couple of hours when DH gets home.  On days I work 2nd, I have the kids in the morning, leave for work at 2, and get home at 12:30 am.

I'm already struggling to get enough sleep, but I know that working out would probably make the sleep I do get more restful.  I hate spending more time away from my DH and kids than I already have to.  We've thought of getting bikes and a trailer to go riding on the weekends, but we live in a bigger city and I'm afraid of sharing the road with cars.  I'm also thinking of buying a jogging stroller, but DD hates being strapped in.  I feel like I'm making a million excuses and I just need to start moving!

Re: Where do you find time?

  • Take you bikes outside of the city and find a nice place to to ride.
  • Get a jogging stroller.  DS1 hates being in it unless we're moving so he actually does really well when I take him running.  DS2 usually falls asleep.  I am a SAHM so I either run with the boys in the stroller (as long as it's light outside, not too cold, and not raining) or I run after H gets home for work.  We eat dinner and hang out with the kids and then I go for a run while he puts the kids to bed.  It works out great for us.  H usually starts p90x while I'm gone after he puts the kids to bed.

  • Do something active with the kids, go to the park, take a walk, run with them in a jogging stroller (think of a way to get encourage them to be strapped in), or swim at family swim.  You don't have to "workout".  Start by being active with the entire family.

Another option would be to get a treadmill or videos that you can do while the kids sleep.
