Re: any nurses or dr.s here? running and bloodwork?

  • not sure if i'm really qualified to answer...but i know for my blood tests they didn't want me to eat/drink anything (except water) until i had my bloodwork drawn.

and there's no way i would be able to run without anything in my belly before (or very soon after)

  • As far as I'm aware, I don't think it will make a difference if you run before or not. However PP makes a good point. If you are fasting for 12-14 hrs you may not feel up to running before. (I know I wouldn't, personally) If its a non-fasting lab, you should be ok.

    this is a fair point!

i guess i'm more concerned about dehydration and how that might eff up any results.  dr. google has not been much help in this matter--lots of conflicting opinions--so i thought i'd try my luck asking here.

  • I'm an RN and I've never read anything specifically about running affecting your lab work...but common medical sense would say that yes, dehydration can definitely alter results, as well as electrolytes (if you've replaced them or not).  And like pp's said, do you have to fast beforehand?  Blood glucose levels are on standard bloodwork so that could be affected as well.  Any reason you can't run afterward?

i'm just not going to have a chance afterward, as i have to get on the road to travel to see my sister, who is having a baby, like, any minute now!

if running is going to mess up results, i'll just have to take an off day tomorrow, and then run on wednesday.  no biggie!

Yeah, if it's no big deal to switch your run with an off day I would do that.  Congrats on being an aunt!
