Toenail talk

Hi! I could use a little toenail advice...

I know it's fairly common for runner to lose their toenails so I figure y'all may be able to help.

My toenail kind looks like this...

(This is not my toe, but pretty close to how the nail looks.)

My nails have a tendency to split towards the top and I guess this time it spilt further down and then finally just came off.

If it going to grow back normal? How long will it usually take? Is it going to be ingrown? Is this what happens to you ladies when you talk about "black toenail" or whatever?

For the record it doesn't hurt at all it's just sensitive now that bare skin is exposed.

What should I do (if anything) to care for it?

I'm pretty concerned because I leave for basic training (Army) late may and I know they can be pretty strict about letting you ship if you have any medical issue.

THANKS a bunch, any advice/help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Toenail talk

  • I had a black toenail. I currently have a nail that has 'died' and I am waiting for it to fall off. When my first one grew back it stopped, I had a nail only in the middle of the nail (this took about 2 months for it to grow back before it stopped) then it started to grow again about two or three months later. It pushed the nail in the middle with it and I just removed all of it yesterday.

My podiatrist told me that had I seen him sooner that he could have helped me. You may want to consider seeing one, espeically if you nail looks something like that with pieces everywhere.

  • I've lost toenails quite a few times and every time they've grown back relatively normal. I say "relatively normal" because although they look normal from a distance the regrown toenails are quite a bit thicker than my other toenails.

However, I've never stopped running or seriously dropped my mileage so about the time they fully grow back I've hit high mileage and they begin the process of falling off all over again...fun!
