My So Called Life Lovers

I never really watched this show when it originally aired because I was a little too young to 'get' it. I tried watching it because something in me told me it would be cool to watch it, but it never stuck.

I just started watching it on Netflix, and I'm wondering if it is too late for me to like this show. More importantly, will I ever stop hating Angela? (I'm on episode 2). She seems like kind of an ahole. Do I have to be a whiny teenager to get her, or does she get better as the series goes on?

Re: My So Called Life Lovers

  • I haven't seen the show since freshman year of college, but I strongly suspect that it may be one of those things that you need to be close in age to get.

  • Sowwy, you're too young. Angst in flannel shirts was real. We lived it.

  • I usually don't have a problem getting sucked into teen dramas (Degrassi anyone?) but I dunno. Maybe it's the flannel...although somewhere I have a totally awesome picture of myself circa 1997 rocking out some over-sized flannel and baggy jeans.
  • I thought she was a b**ch. Brian Krakow forever.

  • Mmm, you may just feel 'eh' about it.

I loved that show in high school.  I still like it now, but rather horrifyingly I find myself feeling sorry for Patty and kind of relating to her more than Angela.  Angela now seems annoying, self-centered, and fickle.  Like, a teenage girl, or something.

And, I used to think that Jordan Catalano was insanely dreamy, but I just watch and think, 'Sooo dumb.  Not just a little dumb.  Way dumb.  Cross-eyed, even.'

    Cute, though.

Were we watching the same show?

    ....Just wonderin.

  • At the time, everyone I knew was all, "AH MAH GAWD, this is my life!!!" (I felt like I was Rayanne Graf's personality with Angela Chase's home and school life.) I watch it now and most of the youths are annoying. Unlike Scotty, I feel sorry for Graham. He tries so hard to be affectionate and both his wife and kid are d!cks.

Jordan Catalano is extremely dumb, but he is the quintessential That Guy that was a trainwreck and never would have been nice to you, but you pined over anyway.

  • He's not dumb, ok? He just can't read!!

I would go to the boiler room with Jordan Catalano any day.

  • I will still watch it if I catch it on, but I cringe at the fact that I once related to it.

I can't even side with the parents at this point.  They are all a bunch of crybabies.

  • I got really cringey the last time I watched it as an adult.  Mostly because it made me worry about how obnoxious I must have been as a teenager.

What's weirder is that I'm pretty sure my mom was a religious watcher of the show, right along with me.  I wonder how she'd feel about it now vs. then.  Huh.  I have the DVDs and she's coming to visit soon, I may have to run an experiment.

  • Krakow was a creepy stalker!

I get that he didn't know how to talk to girls yet, but still...

At least he could speak in complete sentences!
