Good/Cheap sewing machine suggestions..
I'd really like to get a sewing machine, but don't want to spend a bunch of money on one because I won't be using it all the time. I took 2 years of sewing classes a couple years ago so I'm pretty familiar with everything. I'm not sure if that will be helpful, but any suggestions are appreciated! TIA : )
Re: Good/Cheap sewing machine suggestions..
There is information in the Crafts board faqs, located in the green header at the top of the board.
My input....stay away from cheap machines at the big box stores...they are not built well and do not perform well either. The frustration is just not worth the perceived savings, since they are pretty much made to be disposable.
Get the best qualitymachine that you can for the money, whether it a great sale, a used machine or a refurbished machine. You will be much happier with the results and may actually find that you enjoy it and will do it more often.
I sew a lot and I've used the brands Singer, Brother, Janome and Elna. I'd say a good cheap machine would be the Brother LS-2125i. It's pretty basic, but I got one for under $100 at Walmart 5 yrs ago. It still runs great, but I bought another "higher end" Brother because I needed a faster machine with more options, but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg.
Anyways, if you check that model out and it's too basic for you, I would still stick with Brother because they have a ton of machines with many different options and they're super affordable!
I have the Brother machine mentioned in pp, but I have nothing but negative things to say about it. I found it frustrating to use, because it was so cheaply made and sewed so badly. I know other people with experiences similar to mine with that model and other cheap models, and stand by what I said before.
I do think that Brother makes some great machines, but no one makes a great machine at this price point.
