Hot water: electricity vs. propane

Currently we are renting a house and hot water is run on electricity. Our new house is the same thing (bought a house and moving in 2 weeks). We have been advised to switch over to propane for hot water since we will "save money in the long run".

So far we have been ok with the electricity bill, usually $70-$110 for 2 people. We dont seem to use a lot of hot water, we usually wash our clothes using cold water. We take quick showers and dont like to use the dishwasher (hand wash all of our dishes).

Pros? Cons? Thoughts?

Re: Hot water: electricity vs. propane

  • Something will only "save money in the long run" if it's costing you money now.  With the way you guys use water, it sounds like you'd never recoup the investment in a new system.
  • I think that propane water heaters heat the water faster, so if you or your husband like long showers or both start showering at the same time, it's more convenient to have a gas heater.

My reason for wanting a house hooked up to gas is that I think gas ranges are better for cooking.

  • Our new house will have both. Propane for heat & cooking. Electric for hot water & everything else.

All we will need to do is switch the tubes from electric to propane for the water. We already have an additional tube that we can easily switch over to propane, but somebody will need to come in and do it.

I suppose we'll just see how it goes with the hot water run on electric. Was just wondering if it makes a big difference in the electric bill for some of you.

  • We have electricity because propane wasn't an option.

My parents live out in the country and have propane, since their power goes out at least twice in the winter and usually for 2-4 days at a time, it makes sense not to rely on electric heat/hot water.

If your current hot water tank is otherwise in good shape i would leave it as is until it dies.

  • I have a gas hot water heater.    I have never seen a propane... maybe that is regional?

I do think that the gas tank is cheaper than when I had electric at a previous home to operate.

  •

We have propane. Propane is typically for rural areas. I live in the 'country' -- 10 miles outside of town.

There are several calculators out there to give you a rough cost estimate based upon the type of system you have (or will have) - including even oil, coal, corn burners and the like. Do a google search. We had the option for our stove but choose to hook it up using propane. Even if you take 'quick' showers and wash your clothes on cold, heating a home and cooking (using oven) can add up.

Costs are based on area, etc. but on average, propane is almost always cheaper than electricity.

Here is a a small article I found:

    http://www.propane101.com/propanevselectricity.htm

Give you an example, I have a new customer price (we just bought a house 5 months ago), and we were given $1.79 per lb of LP. Even after we are done with our new customer price (given for 6 months), propane is $2.19/lb.

Beyond that, make sure that your furnace is HE and get an efficient heat pump etc. that you pay more for upfront, but will cost you less over the life of the appliance if you end up using propane.
