IN housewarming gift?

We know a newlywed couple who just moved to the US. They're both from Africa (Cameroon), but he's lived in the US/Canada before. As a wedding gift, we promised something once they got to the US.

What would be nice to receive as a gift if you'd just arrived in the US for the first time?

They're living in D.C. area (he's lived there before). And we're only shooting to spend around $50.

Re: IN housewarming gift?

  • If I wasn't too familiar with an area, I would love a gift card to a coffee place nearby and also a local restaurant, so that I was able to go out and explore my new neighbourhood and see what's out there.

If you're thinking of somethign tangible, you could get a bowl or plate that was locally made.

I would also always enjoy a goodie basket of wines and chocolate and maybe a book of things to do in the area, so I could snuggle up at home with my new husband while we looked through the book for fun things to do in our new home.

  • Sounds silly, but a gift card to Walmart. Growing up in SA we would watch movies where people would go to Walmart and it looked amazing. I also remember visiting it for the first time when I was in th US and it was amazing and huge and I wanted to buy everything and try everything. Now I know better. Or you could get a gift card for TJ Maxx or Ross, both places blew my mind the first time I saw them.

  • There are so many great restaurants in DC, I'd probably get them a gift certificate to one so they have an excuse to get out, try someplace new, and have a nice dinner - especially if they don't have a lot of extra cash at the moment.

  • A Target giftcard perhaps?

You could also do an experience, where you invited them to one of your favorite restaurants and picked up the tab or did some activity typical of your area.

    Food is always great too.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the biggest difficulty....apparently in Cameroon it's rude to give money as a wedding gift. So I was a little nervous about a gift card because it seems too similar to money. But I think it's such a good way to ease someone into a new place. And I like all of these ideas so far!

  • I'd also get a DC food guide or something like that to go along with the gift card.

  • Or what about an Entertainment book if they like going out? It's discounts on everything from food to bowling or movies.
  • Thanks ladies! Now I have to talk to DH (it's his colleague). He can be so picky with this stuff but I can hammer him with these ideas.
