Google is NOT your friend.

So, I have slightly high cholesterol levels. That's awesome. I'm SO glad I lost 60 pounds to still have high cholesterol.

Also, I have high alkaline phosphatase levels. I googled about it and it looks like I could have either kidney failure, diabetes (a couple other things in my blood work points to it as well), some sort of bone disease or osteomalacia, which is where my bones are softening due to lack of Vitamin D.

I'm trying NOT to panic, because who knows what the problems are, but I'm pretty bummed.

Why did I lose all that weight to be a diabetic or have high cholesterol? I don't want to be in kidney failure. And when I looked up the symptoms of that, I had  TON of the symptoms. And several women with my IF medical condition have kidney issues.

I'm scared you guys :( I've always had the feeling I'd die young, and that's why I couldn't have kids, but damn...I know none of this is a death certificate, and I could have NONE of the above issues, but still...I'm scared. I want to call the doctor tomorrow and request a sooner appointment.

ETA: I just called MIL, who is a nurse, and explained the results. She was also concerned and confirmed what Google said. She's thinking either kidney issues, like failure, or diabetes.

Re: Google is NOT your friend.

  • I can only imagine how confusing and upsetting that is.  Hopefully you'll find out more info soon.  Like you said though, googling will make you feel worse...I know it's tempting, but try to avoid it in the meantime if you can!

    Also, don't panic and try not to stress until you have definite answers.  If you find out you don't have these issues and you're on the verge then there may be steps you can take to prevent them.  *big hugs*

    P.S.  I had no idea you'd lost 60 pounds...that's amazing!

  • hang in there. You have done very well. Maybe there is a glitch somewhere or something. People of all shapes and sizes (even the damn twigs) can have high cholesterol. I know you can come out of this in the end smiling like you always do.

  • My love. You will be in my prayers but you have to promise me this. . . don't accept this quietly. If you lost 60 pounds and be as remarkable as you are I would not listen.

    Sometimes things take a little time to lower in the body. Cholesterol is actually one of them. Good luck lady! May your fears subside in time just as the cholesterol count lowers.

    I love you too woman! Please keep us informed in all of this.

  • So, I'll start by saying that I would be freaking out too and I don't blame you for beig upset. That being said, let's think this through. What if your kidneys are failing? You go through dialysis, you get on the right meds, worst case scenario - you look into a kidney transplant. It's not a death sentence. What if you have diabetes? You make more positive health changes - which you've proven you know how to do - and you figure out what meds work for your body. You will make it through whatever it is that's making you feel this way. You have to stay positive. When you get to the point of giving up, your body will be right behind you.

    I've cried a few times tonight, but then I started thinking about how I've "beat" MRKH, OCD, severe depression, scoliosis, asthma and lost 60 pounds. No matter what, I've got this. I might cry and complain a few times, but I'm going to keep on keeping on.

  • I know it's upsetting and frustrating, and not knowing exactly what's going in is maddening. Look at it this way, though. You lost 60 pounds, so no matter what, you're still better off for having done that.

    Yes This.

    It's hard to be patient with these things, and I'd be freaking out a little, too, but make sure you talk to your doc and get all of the facts before you drive yourself nuts.  {{{{{HUGS}}}}}
