Questions about changing jobs

I have never changed jobs (had this job for 7 years) and I am curious about a few things. Just for future reference maybe?no plans at the moment.

How far back do you go in listing employment history on your resume?

How many references do you have on your resume (or do you say "references available upon request")?

Who are your references? (former co-workers, current co-workers, etc)

When you decided to look for a new job, did you tell your current boss?

Did prospective new employers contact your current boss about you?

How much notice did you give your current job that you were leaving?

How did you notify your job that you were leaving?

Re: Questions about changing jobs

  • How far back do you go in listing employment history on your resume? Mine goes back about 10 years, but I've summarized a great deal to keep it all on two pages. It's more about length and relevance than number of years, IMO.

How many references do you have on your resume (or do you say "references available upon request")? I have a separate references sheet that lists three people. I only provide it when requested.

Who are your references? (former co-workers, current co-workers, etc) My references are my last boss and two managers from the job I held prior to that.

When you decided to look for a new job, did you tell your current boss? No. I would fear them letting me go before I had something new lined up.

Did prospective new employers contact your current boss about you? Only if I give them permission. They're generally pretty savvy to the fact that folks may be looking without their current boss knowing, and will ask if it's okay to contact each manager you have listed on your resume. When I was job hunting without my boss knowing, I asked that they not be contacted. When I was job hunting because my position was being dissolved and my boss knew fully well that I was looking, I gave the okay for him to be contacted.

How much notice did you give your current job that you were leaving? I've always given the standard 2 weeks. If I was in more of a management position, worked for a smaller company and didn't want to leave them in the lurch, etc., I might try for 3-4 to give them more time to replace me.

How did you notify your job that you were leaving? I always did it in writing - a letter of resignation.

Edited to try to fix formatting.

  • How far back do you go in listing employment history on your resume?I listed all employment that was relevant, so like the waitressing jobs I had in college weren't listed but the internship that led to a full time position was.

How many references do you have on your resume (or do you say "references available upon request")? I usually listed three references if the job posting stated that references were required along with the resume.

Who are your references? (former co-workers, current co-workers, etc) Former co-workers, current co-workers who knew I was job seeking, friends who work in the same field.

When you decided to look for a new job, did you tell your current boss? No.

Did prospective new employers contact your current boss about you?No, and I specifically asked them not to.

How much notice did you give your current job that you were leaving?Typically, 2 weeks at the least. If I knew sooner I told them sooner.

How did you notify your job that you were leaving? Written resignation letter.

Good Luck!!! I know this has been on your mind a lot lately!!

  • They usually  want the last 10 years of your work history.

On my resume I said references available upon request.

References were old coworkers and my neighbor since I babysat her kids while I stayed home for a little bit.

I didn't tell my current boss because they would have tried to get rid of me before I left.

I checked the box to not contact my current employer and all I had to do was show them my last pay stubs.

I gave 2 weeks because it was the professional thing to do. I didn't want to be there 2 more weeks but I was doing the right thing. However they didn't make me finish the 2 wks. Some jobs will let you go before the 2 wks is up.

I told my boss face to face and also typed up an official resignation letter.

  • How far back do you go in listing employment history on your resume? mine goes back about 13 yrs (ive had the same job for 11.5) and I did the prior one as well, but I was just out of HS

How many references do you have on your resume (or do you say "references available upon request")?  I don't have references listed but always have them readily available if asked

Who are your references? (former co-workers, current co-workers, etc) a friend in the same general industry i'm in and a a friend who has seen my work for years

When you decided to look for a new job, did you tell your current boss? no

Did prospective new employers contact your current boss about you? no

How much notice did you give your current job that you were leaving? Professionally and personally, I prefer to give at least the standard 2 wks.  If that can't be arranged, then i'll just do what I have to do and figure things out.

How did you notify your job that you were leaving? I've thought about this a lot if the time arises.  My situation is a lot different than a typical work environment.  It won't be easy to leave and it will come with many tears.  I'm not really sure how i'd do it, but i've thought about a heartfelt letter because I will be able to get my feelings and appreciation out without sobbing through a verbal chat.  Also it will allow me to say everything and not forget something amidst the tears.

How far back do you go in listing employment history on your resume?  My current resume goes back about 8 years, but that is when I started my first out of college job.  Also resume's for Federal Jobs are waaaay different than those in private sector.

How many references do you have on your resume (or do you say "references available upon request")?   I have 3

Who are your references? (former co-workers, current co-workers, etc) All are former co-workers/boss

When you decided to look for a new job, did you tell your current boss?  No.  I think the only time you tell your current employer is if you are trying to use finding a new job as leverage for moving up in your current company.  DH has been looking and has been on a few interviews (one offer, but it was crap) and he discussed it with his boss and that pushed his boss to make sure his promotion, that had been sitting on a directors desk, went through.  He was too valuable to loose.

Did prospective new employers contact your current boss about you?  I always put on my resume to please contact me before contacting my current employer. If the interview process got to that stage I would give my boss a heads up.

How much notice did you give your current job that you were leaving?  I gave 2 weeks.

How did you notify your job that you were leaving?  I made an apointment with my boss at the time, I sat down and told her and also had it officially in writing for HR.

  • How far back do you go in listing employment history on your resume? I've only been in the workforce for 5 years, so I have all of it on there. One internship, my first career-job, and my current job, as well as some freelance credentials.

How many references do you have on your resume (or do you say "references available upon request")? I don't have references on my resume.

Who are your references? (former co-workers, current co-workers, etc) One is a former boss who is a good friend, the other is a former coworker whom I technically "supervised" who is a good friend. If they ask for a third, I typically put another former boss who no longer works for the company.
