I am involved with another coworker developing a young professionals group at my office and our kick off meeting is on Thursday.
I'd say maybe 50% of the people know each other... the other 50% don't talk to hardly anyone. So we need some icebreakers to get everyone to come out of their shells. Going around the room saying something about yourself just doesn't seem as effective - so I was trying to think of a good, fun icebreaker that wouldn't make a room full of engineers just groan. :-)
Re: Good Ice Breakers?
A common thing we often do is say your name, blah blah, and then tell everyone what your first concert was. Always some good laughs.
Another thing is have people submit first something people don't know about them - the idea is to make it funny or interesting not like "I have 3 kids" and then you read them and find out who it is.
Example - my friend often used "I was a hooker in College". Turns out, the 'real story' is she played Rugby in College - she played the position of the 'hooker'.
Mine was that "I've been in Austin Powers' Shagmobile". Which I was, we sold it at the auction house I used to work for and I got a picture of me sitting in it.
2 truths and a lie is always fun. I had one where you choose a favorite candy bar and then there are descriptions of your personality based on the choice.
ETA: The descriptions
WHAT'S YOUR CANDY BAR PERSONALITY?
BABY RUTH
Sweet, loving, cuddly. You love all warm fuzzy items. A little nutty. Sometimes you need a little eat like an ice cream cone at the end of the day.
3 MUSKETEERS
You are adventurous, love new ideas, are a champion of underdogs and a slayer of dragons. When tempers flare up, you whip out your saber.
BUTTER FINGER
Smooth articulate, you are an excellent after-dinner speaker and a good teacher. But don't try to walk and chew gum at the same time.
SNICKERS
Fun-loving, sassy, humorous. Everyone enjoys being around you. But you are a practical joker -- others should be cautious in shaking hands!
HERSHEY'S
Romantic, warm, loving. You care about other people and can be counted on in a pinch. You tend to melt and get gushy if held too close.
ENERGY BAR
You are very active. You are so active, life is passing you by. Get a life!!!! Go eat a plum.

16 read! my read shelf:
I like these! I have never heard of the candy bar one before... I am going to save that and give it a go.
Naylon - I just googled and saw the one about random/funny facts about yourself and guessing who it was... I am glad you guys had a good experience with it since I wasn't sure how it would go.
Speaking of rugby... my project manager was a hooker in college too. Myself and another girl would always give him a hard time about it...so now he calls us his "Rugger Huggers". We have signs and everything. haha.
I also like the one where you match the random fun facts up to people. 2 truths and a lie is always a hit and usually leads to lots of laughs.
I do some of these with my college classes on the first night of class...
1. People scavenger hunt- you make a form that has statements (like this person hates chocolate, this person has never been to a UGA football game, this person was born in September, this person knows someone famous, etc) and then they all roam around and find someone's name to write down. You can make the statements relevant to the group you have.
2. Buy those mini bags of M&Ms (or Skittles, etc) and have them tell you 1 thing about themselves per color. Ex: For the red ones, tell 1 good quality about yourself, green tell 1 bad one, yellow tell your favorite book, etc.
3. 20 Questions- for this one you make up 20 questions and everyone answers them. Ex: Who is your favorite superhero and why, if you life was a movie what genre would it be, are you a morning or night person, where is your favorite place to visit, etc.
