Business Casual Question

For the past 2 yrs my dress code has been extremely casual. I start the new  job tomorrow and it's business casual. I've gone shopping for plenty of things that I know will work, but how would trouser jeans be classified? I mean, they're really more pants than jeans. FWIW, DH thought they were navy blue pants when he saw me. Could really dark trouser jeans w/a blazer/jacket, a dressy cami and heels work for business casual?

Re: Business Casual Question

  • I think business casual varies from place to place. I wouldnt wear them this week, but wait a little bit to see if they would be acceptable.

That's what I was thinking. I guess I'll go in on the dressier side of business casual and observe what everyone else is wearing. Thanks!

  • I would not consider any kind of denim business casual. But if your new office does - awesome! :)

This is exactly what I would do. I always think it's better to lean toward over-dressed than under-dressed and then adjust accordingly. Good luck!

  • I've never seen denim as anything business -- casual or otherwise.

  • My gut would be no to the denim. But I agree you'll probably get a much better feel after you've been there a while.

Someone at work the other day told me I was dressed in "business comfortable". whatever that means, lol. I was wearing slacks, a nice tank and a cardigan. It seems that jeans and polo shirts are perfectly acceptable here, so I'm not to worried about it.

  • I didn't buy them for work, so it doesn't matter if I can't  wear them for work. I was just hoping to be able to throw them into the rotation. When I worked for the state years ago it was business casual and a lot of people wore pants similar to this (but maybe darker & w/professional shoes)

But like Martiza said, I know that's defined differently at different offices. Plus, they might have more casual Fridays, I don't yet. Either way, you all confirmed my initial thought which was to err on the side of dressier for awhile until I get a good feel for the dress code parameters. Thanks!

  • My employer is business casual with denim allowed on Fri, Sat & Sun. Even when I worked at Wal-Mart we couldn't wear jeans during the week. I'd go with dressier until you see how everyone else dresses.

  • It would be okay in my office, but we're super casual.  For a new job, I'd wait and see what everyone else is wearing before wearing them.

  • Our dress code is business casual, and I wear trouser jeans all the time (so does my boss).  I'm sure it varies from company to company though.
