F/U to my only child post

You know, I really do think it is true that life only gives you as much as you can handle.  Probably right around the time that Mackenzie turned four months things seemed to change from night to day.

She is so interactive now, smiling, giggling, talking to us.  She seems to have gotten past her super fussy, eat ALL-THE-TIME phase.  I genuinely enjoy being with her during the day and just watching her as she seems to learn new things every day.  (I did get used to not having to be on mom duty 24-7 while we were with the IL's in Palm Springs though!)  We keep ourselves busy and that helps to pass the weekdays while DH is at work.

We are still talking about whether we will have more than one kid, but the thought of more than one doesn't scare me as much as it did.

  • Things definitly get better when they become more interactive and fun! Brin cracks me up every day.

  • So glad you made it past that hump!  Being "on" 24/7 is hard work and it wears you down fast.  Now that she is getting older and doing more she will get even more fun!

Don't forget to enjoy the time she still cuddles with you because that disappears FAST!

  • I'm so happy that things have been getting easier for you! This definitely helps and makes it more fun, especially when baby's start to talk/play etc.

  • That is great to hear! The first few months are definitely the hardest, and it gets easier once they start smiling and playing more... then they start moving and that's when it gets really fun (and tiring lol). :)

  • You sound so much like my best friend. She had a really tough time with her first one... she struggled a lot, her emotions were out of whack, she was exhausted and swore she'd not have any more children. Then as it got more routine and like you said, interactive, she changed her mind. After number two, she swore again she was DONE... in fact they even went to a "snip snip" consultation... Suddenly, this past fall, she had a change of heart when number two was a few months shy of 4 years old. She is now expecting her third.

You just never know. I think this teaches me to try and let go and just see what hpapens. How you feel today may change in a few months and who knows what life will bring you but I'm glad you are enjoying everything more and feeling more secure in the lifestyle. :) Hugs!

  • I'm glad you're feeling better! Like Crystal, you sound a lot like my best friend. She had her first in November, and the first 2 months were pretty bad. He had both reflux and colic, doesn't really sleep, and screamed for hours on end. She swore she wasn't having anymore (even though she originally wanted 4). Now that he's doing better, I can already see her warming to the idea of having more, and he's only 3 months old.

So, in my limited experience, I think what you went through is totally normal, and I'm very happy that you're feeling better! Enjoy your time with Kenzie!!!

  • I'm glad things are getting easier/better for you. One of my co-workers had the exact same feelings when her first was around the same age as Kenzie. She was feeling very overwhelmed and couldn't picture herself having another. Now that her daughter is 2 1/2, she's pregnant with #2.

  • Same thing happened to Anders-it's like a little switch flipped and he became more like a little person overnight. I remember around 5 months I started saying I wanted to stop working and be home with him.

I can tell you that thus far, going from 1 to 2 has been 100 times easier than going from none to one. You already have a routine going with your 1st kiddo, you have experienced the insanity that is a newborn, and you are more confident in your parenting choices. I am fully aware that we are "lucky" because Anders is obsessed with B and really did not have any problem transitioning to having a sister, but we also committed to keeping his schedule the same, dedicating one on one time with him daily, and started a new "baby is coming" schedule with him when I was about 7 months pregnant.

I think you and the bubba will figure out what works best for you as a family. You had a rough post partum and that is scary to think of repeating. My thoughts are, give it a few more months and revisit your thoughts. Babies change so fast that what you're feeling one month can totally change the next!
