Thoughts on a road trip from Denver-Moab-Santa Fe-Denver
Thinking of doing this road trip in September/early October. It would be H and I and we would rent a car and drive spending a couple days in each location. Has anyone done this or been to these places individually? Is it interesting/any must see or dos?
Re: Thoughts on a road trip from Denver-Moab-Santa Fe-Denver
What do you like to do? This part of the country is beautiful for hiking. There are many nice places to stopover in between too. I'm sure people can give you the scoop on Denver, but I can give you some recs on the Denver-Moab ride.
I went for a work trip for almost a half of that trip, thus it was a lot more DH telling me about the stuff! We started in Grand Junction, which is is probably midway between between Denver and Moab. I got to hike a bit of the Colorado National Monument Park (DH more obviously). It seemed like a quiet town, but other than the Parks and trails, not sure what else.
We then stopped at Glenwood Springs, CO. Again, I did some work but DH hung out at the springs. We then rented bikes and biked around (cannot remember the trail) and then we hiked to Hanging Lake, which was gorgeous. We stayed at Hotel Denver which was I thought was a bit pricey but work paid so oh well. We ate nexxt door at the Canyon Brewing company which was fun.
We then drove to Denver to fly out. From the Grand Junction to Denver, the drive was so scenic along 70.
We went to Taos and stopped over at Santa Fe earlier this year and I put a trip report up I think last month.
We are going to Moab in May to hike the different parks - we will be spending a whole week just in that area - still debating which ones to split our time backpacking!
I lived near Denver for 10 years and we made a roadtrip to Moab two years ago. I have never been to Santa Fe, but would have loved to go. Moab is awesome if you love the outdoors and hiking. We went in July, and it was WAY too hot, so September or October would be perfect. However, I would lean toward early September or early October if you could, as I-70 could be rough starting in later October- snow in mountains can be unpredictable past the Eisenhower Tunnel.
There are some interesting stops in Colorado on your way to Moab- there are TONS of wineries in Palisades. We stayed at the Colorado Wine Country Inn and went winery hopping all day. Another great stop is Glenwood Springs- go swim in the hot springs! These are both one day quick trips.
In Moab, definitely hit Arches, and I loved Canyonlands. There is also a brewery there, but lower % of alcohol because it is Utah. I don't have a lot of suggestions about Denver, as I lived and spent most of my time a half hour north near Boulder, Longmont, Fort Collins, and Estes Park. There is a previous post about these towns in Colorado a page or two down with suggestions. They could all be possibilities for you.
I've been to Moab in late September and it was a great time to visit. I did it part of a road trip from Las Vegas thru AZ and UT and then back to LV. We did 4 days in Moab. It was awesome and I would love to go back. We did tons of hiking in Arches, Canyonlands and watched the sunrise at Dead Horse State Park which was amazing. The weather was in the 80's so not too hot. I loved the town too. Lots of neat places to eat and drink. We also did some 4x4 ing over the slickrocks and did a rafting trip on the Colorado river.
I live about an hour from Santa Fe, NM. The first full week October in Albuquerque is the International Balloon Fiesta. It is an amazing sight to see. If you are planning on coming around that time I would NOT miss it! Honestly it is one of the most amazing experiences to see! In Santa Fe, there are some amazing art galleries. Check out canyon road. make sure that you try to avoid Mondays there because that is the day a lot of the galleries are closed.
I also love Denver, it is a really fun town to be in and around. The Art museum there is fantastic. Sounds like a really fun trip! Enjoy!
