Would you rather spend a day in St. Thomas or St. John?

We fly to Puerto Rico to depart on a 7 day cruise in July. Our first stop is in St. Thomas on July 9th, which is our 1 year anniversary, so I want to be sure hubby and I spend the day in a very special way. This is our first cruise together too though, so we probably won't be hard to please.

I've read in various places that St. John is not to be missed, and it would be totally worth it to take a ferry from St. Thomas to St. John and just spend the day there. What do you all think? It will be our 1st anniversary and I want it to be a special day. We dock in St. Thomas at 8am and have to be back on the boat at 5 or 6.

Please share your opinions/experiences. Thanks :)

  • St. Thomas, right where the cruise ship docks, is very touristy and full of "discount jewelry" shops. We took a champagne cat sail through the cruise line to St. John and it was a lot of fun. The water was so blue and we swam with a lot of stingrays.
  • sounds like we are taking the same cruise.  we've been to STT a handful of times, so this trip we are spending the day sailing over to St John doing this:

we looked into taking a ferry over to St John but the scheduled times were unfavorable in my opinion.

  • I'd get off of St. Thomas as fast as you could and spend the day in St. John. It's beautiful, peaceful and laid back whereas St. Thomas is loud, crowded and full of people trying to sell you crap.

  • St. John is much nicer, but getting there is a pain, IMO. There are a few more secluded beaches in St. Thomas that you can find by reading its port board at cruise critic.
  • I would vote for St. John.  But I also hate St. Thomas!!  The only thing I would recommend is finding out how many ships are in port with you in St. Thomas, if there are more than 2 or 3 the traffic getting to the ferry and then back to the ships gets very congested and might not be worth your time.

The couple times we have had a lot of island traffic in St. Thomas we just stay on the ship because it's nearly empty and makes for a great pool day!

  • it's SO easy to get to st john. take a taxi to red hook, buy round trip tickets on the ferry, and go/ you'll go to cruz bay, st john. from there you can get a taxi to anywhere or just wander around town as it's right there. you can google usvi ferry schedule. there is also a ferry that goes from charlotte amalie in st thomas but it runs only 1/3 as frequently, takes much longer and is more expensive.
